Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

For December 24, 2022 - January 7 2023

The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned to occur in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers should expect potential delays when traveling in this area, and are encouraged to visit 511virginia.org for current information on travel conditions and work zones in Virginia. All construction-related work and closures are subject to change based on weather and other factors.

Lane Closures

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY)

I-495 North and South

Tuesday, January 3, through Thursday, January 5, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single left lane closures on north- and southbound I-495 between the Live Oak Drive bridge and Old Dominion Drive bridge for work on the two bridges.

Tuesday, January 3, through Friday, January 6, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Triple right lane closures on southbound I-495 between Old Dominion Drive and Georgetown Pike for sound wall removal. This work may extend into Saturday night, weather permitting.

Tuesday, January 3, through Friday, January 6, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Multi-lane closures on the right side of northbound I-495 between Georgetown Pike and the Dulles Corridor Interchange for noise wall removal support work and survey work on the Scott's Run bridge. This work may extend into Saturday night, weather permitting.

Tuesday, January 3, through Friday, January 6, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Possible double mobile lane closures on north- and southbound I-495 throughout the project corridor for lane striping work.

DULLES CORRIDOR INTERCHANGE

Dulles Toll Road

Tuesday, January 3, through Friday, January 6, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Single left lane closures on westbound Dulles Toll Road connector between Route 123 and the I-495 interchange for bridge work. The right shoulder of the westbound Dulles Access Road will also be closed for this work.

Tuesday, January 3, through Friday, January 6, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The onramp from eastbound Dulles Toll Road to northbound I-495 (exit 18) will be narrowed (no lane closures) for vehicle access to the construction yard for bridge support work.

Traffic Changes

I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road

Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange. George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495

Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project. Learn more about the traffic change here.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scotts Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge.

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
