FROM THE RECTOR

Dear People of Saint Paul's,

After two years of faithful and cheerful service as River Room Coordinator and Administrative Assistant, Hannah Hutto recently gave notice that she'll be leaving Saint Paul's. Hannah's new job will let her exercise her passion for animals in a professional setting every day. The clergy of the parish tried to forestall this event by bringing our own dogs into work often, but to no avail.

Hannah has been a wonderful member of the Saint Paul's community. Under her stewardship, we've seen a welcome increase in the use and revenue of the River Room. She has also provided some vital assistance to our administrative staff. But most importantly, she has consistently been a kind and compassionate face of Saint Paul's to all who come to the church doors—prospective River Room clients and the varied visitors who stop by an active downtown church on a daily basis. We will miss her very much after her last day on September 4.

Hannah's departure brings the church's staffing needs back into focus. We must have a River Room coordinator. We must have more clerical/administrative help. The parish at large and the parish leadership have long identified a director of children and youth ministries as our staffing priority. And we need a parish life coordinator and would quite like a staff member dedicated to communications. Not all of those are full time jobs, but that's quite a lot of musts, priorities, needs, and things we would quite like. Certainly we are not currently in a position to hire for all that work, even at part-time. But we do have some resources at our disposal—both budgeted hours and dedicated Christians with skills to meet some of these opportunities and needs. We can do everything that we're called to do—we just can't currently pay someone to help us do it all.

In the coming days, we'll make prayerful decisions about how to deploy the hours budgeted for the position Hannah has filled so well. And where we can't hire, we'll recruit, equip, and support lay ministers from the parish. If this year's annual giving campaign goes well, we can enter the new year with increased capacity to put our love for God, each other, and our neighbors into action while stewarding what has been entrusted to us and moving toward sustainable practices for our administrative staff.

Please send Hannah thanks and best wishes before her last day. Please pray for those of us making staffing decisions in the coming days. And please continue to explore and exercise your own ministries among us at this wonderful church.

Sunday Forum

The Epistle of James, led by Fr. Biddy

Sundays, 9:30 AM, The Berlin Room

Martin Luther famously called the Epistle of James an “epistle of straw” and put it in an appendix to his translation of the Bible. The book has often been overlooked and denigrated since. And yet of all the letters in the New Testament, it may be the closest to the content of Jesus’ teaching ministry. We’ll read it carefully to start the program year, using the most recent scholarship on James to understand it and apply it to our lives today.
