New Faculty Appointments
Thiago Bruder, PhD
Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology and Cell Biology
Dr. Thiago Bruder's research is dedicated to revealing the cellular and molecular mechanisms driving the development and progression of arterial hypertension and vasculitis, with a particular focus on vascular biology. As part of the Department of Physiology & Cell Biology, his laboratory uses an integrative approach that merges a broad spectrum of physiological, pharmacological, and molecular techniques, alongside the use of genetically engineered mouse models of disease. Additionally, Dr. Bruder’s lab is dedicated to fostering close collaborations with physicians, thereby enhancing the clinical relevance of his studies.
John Soltys, MD, PhD
Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology
Dr. Soltys, MD, PhD, recently joined the Dept. of Neurology as a clinician-scientist. He is a USA Neurology Residency graduate and recently completed an honorary fellowship in autoimmune neurology at the University of Oxford. His research interest is neuroimmunology, with focus on multiple sclerosis and paraneoplastic autoimmune brain disease. His lab is based in the Medical Sciences Building on main campus and he will hold a secondary appointment in the Dept. of Physiology and Cell Biology.
New Research Support Staff
Jennifer Mills
Director, Health System Grants Administration and Development
Jennifer joins us from the University of Alabama (UA), where she was the Manager for Electronic Research Administration, Training and Reporting. Jennifer brings a wealth of experience in research administration, research administration training, and research reporting using advanced analytics tools. She is a Certified Research Administrator and an active member of the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA).
Michael Summers
Operations Manager, COM Facilities
Michael joins us from Johnson Controls with over 10 years’ experience in HVAC and building control systems. He is taking over the position previously held by Howard Shell that oversees the management and maintenance of facilities in MSB and the LID, including autoclaves, fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, eyewash stations and emergency showers, water systems, security access to the buildings, biohazardous waste, and in general, ensuring that building facilities are operational.
Elizabeth Lilly
Senior Research Lab Manager
Elizabeth will oversee and coordinate the operational activities of research laboratories in the College of Medicine, with an emphasis on the shared facilities and resources at the MCI. Elizabeth is currently a Research Technician IV in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology. Prior to joining the University of South Alabama, she was Laboratory Supervisor in the lab of Mairi Noverr, PhD, at Tulane University and preceding that, a Research Associate at LSU Health Sciences Center (also under Dr. Noverr). She has worked in biomedical labs for over 23 years and brings a wealth of experience in managing biomedical research facilities.

Metabolism Interest Group at USA
Dr. Lucia Plant would like to initiate the formation of a Metabolism Interest Group at the University of South Alabama. The goal of this group is to bring together faculty, researchers, and clinicians who are interested in the broad field of metabolism, providing a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and discussion.

This group would aim to:
  • Foster collaborations between researchers and clinicians in the area of metabolism.
  • Share the latest research findings and methodologies, including the use of seahorse technologies for different applications.
  • Discuss challenges and innovations in understanding metabolic processes.
  • Organize workshops and journal clubs.

Whether your work involves nutrient sensing, cellular metabolism, energy homeostasis in animal models or clinical aspects of metabolic disorders, your expertise and insights would be invaluable to this group.

If you are interested in participating or have any suggestions regarding the structure of the meetings (e.g. in person or over zoom) or frequency of the meetings (e.g. weekly, twice a month or once a month), please reach out directly to Dr. Lucia Plant.

Applications Open for 2024-25 Intramural Grants Program
We are pleased to announce the 2024-2025 Whiddon College of Medicine Intramural Grants Program. This opportunity, which is open to eligible COM faculty, supports basic, clinical or translational research in the College that is expected to lead to extramural grants support. Two tracks for funding are offered: (a) Seed Track and (b) Revised Track. The total funding available is $250,000 and awards will be made in the $25,000-50,000 range.

See the program announcement for eligibility and required submission materials. All application materials, including a cover page and the transmittal page, must be collated into one PDF file and sent directly to Skye Andrade in the Office of Research (skyeandrade@southalabama.edu). [Note: We are no longer using InfoReady for submissions]

The deadline for submission is 5pm on Friday, October 18, 2024. Late or incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Awards are anticipated to commence in December.
Welcome New Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) Students
We are thrilled to welcome our new cohort of PhD students from diverse backgrounds across the globe. This year, our incoming class includes students from the United States, including three University of South Alabama alums, as well as students from Nigeria, South Africa, and India. Orientation week is designed to help our new students transition smoothly into their graduate studies. Highlights of the week include: Meet the Tracks Lunch and Learn Series, Campus Tour, Meet & Greet event with students and faculty, Lunch with BMS students, and Mentor-Mentee Sessions including effective communication and a student panel on choosing a track. We are excited to see the contributions our new PhD students will make and look forward to a successful year ahead!
Edwin R. Hughes Memorial Award
Jonathan Cortez received the Edwin R. Hughes Memorial Award for the 2023-2024 academic award year during fall orientation for matriculating students. Cortez is in the Ph.D. Doctoral Program, and his mentor is Dr. Marie Migaud. A plaque and cash award were presented to Cortez by Dr. Christopher Davies, Associate Dean for Research. The award is named in memory of Edwin R. Hughes. Hughes served as Director of the Basic Medical Sciences Graduate Program at the College of Medicine. The award recognizes the student with the best academic performance in the program’s core curriculum.
New Frederick P. Whiddon
College of Medicine Building Update
As many have seen (or felt), piling is now underway for the new Whiddon College of Medicine. As of mid-August, pile driving of the first 99 pilings for the research wing has been completed and the pile driving rig is shifting location to install 16 pilings that will be used to support the tower crane and the test pile of the education wing. Pile driving for the basement of the research wing will then resume at the end of the month. The second phase of pile driving for the education wing will start in mid-January and is expected to take approximately 4 weeks to complete.
