Finding Peace in Planning

Your important information, documents, and plans for the unexpected all in one place

It may be difficult to look ahead to a time when you are unable to manage your household, or communicate about your financial affairs, your personal wishes, and desires. It may seem unfathomable that an emergency situation would require you and your family to make important decisions on a moment’s notice.

Why is it important to plan and record important information? Because how we and our loved ones live the latter part of life, how we die, is a big deal. Yet it is the subject most of us want to avoid. We are willing to plan for weddings, childbirth, college, and retirement, but not end of life care. Often, we wait until a crisis to make these decisions when decision making is most difficult, instead of while sitting around the kitchen table.

This conference “Finding Peace in Planning “will help guide you and your loved ones on how to start the conversation, organize important documents, give you tools for your toolbox and give you a step-by-step guide to record important information before it is ever needed. It’s the essential organizer to grab at a moment’s notice or when crucial questions arise. And a great comfort to your family.

Join us on Friday, November 4, 2022, from 9 am – 1:30 pm for the Washington County Cancer Conference at the Lee Pellon Center in Machias. The theme of the conference is ‘Finding Peace in Planning.' The conference will offer patients in treatment, survivors, and caregivers an interactive tour guided by The Five Wishes Conversation Guide. Wishes include:

Who you want to make health care decisions for you when you can't make them.

The kind of medical treatment you want or don't want.

• How comfortable you want to be.

• How you want people to treat you.

• What you want your loved ones to know.

In addition to compiling a guide, you’re invited to listen to speakers discussing cancer in Maine and emerging supports, a patient panel, and a complimentary lunch.

The conference is free, open to all and is planning to be hosted in person.

October Is Breast Cancer

Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. We want to bring awareness to Breast Cancer in men this month as well as women too. And yes men get breast cancer too.

It is often a difficult topic to think and talk about for a variety of reasons. There may be misconceptions such as "only women get breast cancer, breast cancer is a women's disease, or men don't have breasts so how can they get breast cancer." None of these statements are true. That is why we are shining the spotlight on the symptoms of male breast cancer and much more.

We want to open the door to the conversation about male breast cancer and any misunderstanding or confusion about it. If you want to start the conversation please call us here at the Beth Wright Center at 207-664-0339, email us at info@bethwrightcancercenter.org or drop into the Center at 23 Commerce Park in Ellsworth.

Take a look at the symptoms on the flyer below and if you notice anything unusual, please reach out to your healthcare provider.

Knowledge, action, and good self-care can lead to an early diagnosis and better outcomes.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Drive is brought to you by the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center and our friends at Healthy Acadia

Check out our Facebook page to see our weekly posts this month about breast cancer awareness, symptoms, risk factors and early detection.

Making healthy lifestyle choices can reduce your risk of cancer. The LiveWell Program is a holistic approach to creating a personal wellness plan focusing on emotional and spiritual wellness; physical activity; healthy diet; personal environment; and rejuvenation. In this program we will examine these five elements plus the body’s five key pathways to health described in the ground-breaking book: The Definitive Guide to Thriving After Cancer.

Accessible steps offer the opportunity for people living with cancer to achieve better treatment outcomes, and to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. This free series is also open to those without a cancer diagnosis, who wish to reduce their cancer risk and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Each session will include an explanation of the topic for the week and a guest speaker to talk about specific strategies and resources. Time for questions and discussion will follow.

The five weeks of topics are:

Week 1 –– Introduction to LiveWell & The Definitive Guide to Thriving After Cancer.

Week 2 –– Enhance Your Spirit; Create Rejuvenation

Week 3 –– Let’s Move

Week 4 –– Enrich Your Diet

Week 5 –- Create a Healthy Living Environment

Special October Programs

Beth Wright and Dempsey Center Collaborations

Managing Cancer Treatment Side Effects

with Cannabis/CBD

with Dr. Dustin Sulak & Shari Berman

Friday, October 28, 2022

10:00 - 11:15 am

Zoom or Beth Wright Center

The Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center is collaborating with the Dempsey Center to bring another new program to cancer patients and survivors in Hancock and Washington County communities.

From treating pain and nausea to helping to ease the symptoms of neuropathy, more and more studies are coming out that demonstrate positive benefits from the safe use of CBD and other cannabinoids. On Friday, October 28, 10:00 to 11:15 am, join the Dempsey Center and experts Dr. Dustin Sulak and Shari Berman online to discuss alternative and adjunctive ways to manage the side effects of cancer and cancer treatments.

Navigating a cancer diagnosis is difficult in and of itself but finding support and connecting with those who understand adds another layer of challenges, especially when living in a rural area. To help ease the journey through a cancer diagnosis for those living in Central Maine, the Dempsey Center has partnered with Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center to bring their services to the Ellsworth area.

Using the Dempsey Connects virtual platform, clients of Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center will be able to access select programs virtually from the comfort of their own home or at the Beth Wright Center if they do not have access to computer technology. These telecasted classes will allow clients across the state access to high-quality programs and encourage connection between those who have been impacted by cancer.

As with all Dempsey Center and Beth C. Wright services, this online program free and is open to all. This program is possible thanks to the support of Jane’s Trust, a charitable foundation located in Boston, MA, and Hannaford Foundation.
