Window Wisdom

During the 17th century, glass windows finally became more affordable and were commonly installed during home construction and people noticed how much safer the inside was from unwanted visitors when there was glass in the openings instead of just oiled paper.

Do you have children under the age of 5 in your home?

Can they reach a window?

Don't let a moment's lapse in attention equal tragedy!

The Problem

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), approximately 12 children aged 10 and under succumb to window-related accidents annually, with over 4,000 receiving treatment in hospital emergency rooms. Since 1990, CPSC has documented 120 window-fall fatalities among children. Most incidents involve children under 5 years old.

The Solution

CPSC's guidelines for preventing window falls include:

  • Installing window guards in rooms frequented by young children, including bedrooms.
  • Alternatively, installing window stops to limit openings.
  • Never relying solely on screens to prevent falls.
  • Preferably opening windows from the top rather than the bottom.
  • Keeping furniture away from windows to deter children from climbing near them.
