Dear Farm Friends,

This week's Mountain Bounty farmer interview is with Lex Cook. Lex leads our Nevada City farmers market effort on Saturdays, as well as working part time in the fields and taking care of her aging mother.

Tell us about yourself Lex!

My name is Alexis Olivia Cook. I’m 36. I am originally from Phoenix, Arizona, and I tripped over this place looking for a new place to grow food. 4 years ago, when it became clear that my mom needed my care, we began looking for a place to settle together, and I wanted an area where I could farm and garden. I’m a biologist and I worked for several years in an immunology lab exploring the genetics behind kidney disease. During that time I gradually realized you don’t have to do everything that you can do.

So I bought a one way ticket to Peru, and spent the next 3 years traveling and working on farms. Farming felt so real. What I want and need to do with my life are the essential things that being alive requires. This place is incredible, it feeds so much of the community.

So now I’m working part-time on the farm, caring for my mom, mostly ignoring my garden, and learning how to fix a lot of things in the very funky old house we bought in North San Juan: A leaky roof, leaky plumbing, installing flooring, making holes in the ceiling and then patching them. I’m also a musician, I play guitar and sing in a band. I made a commitment to a least touch the guitar every single day, so even if I’m dead tired I will pluck one string.

Anything else you want to tell us about farming or food?

It regularly blows my mind just how connected we are to the literal ground here at the farm. The place where we live is where the food grows. The same rain that I feel, the plants feel. The food I grow is exposed to the place I’m in and that prepares me to be in this place too. And then we share that with the community and then everyone’s kind of made of this place together. That feels like the right way to live.

A note about box returns!

There are a few things we ask our members to do so we can continue to reuse the boxes efficiently:

  1. Remove the fruit from your boxes immediately so the fruit does not stain the box (plus it keeps longer outside of the plastic shell).
  2. Store your Fruit Share box inside until you return it
  3. If your box is torn or stained, please do not return it and instead place it in your recycling bin. Both farms are using crew time to manage the box return program, so we'd love to only deal with boxes that can truly be reused.

Thanks for your support!
