Reflections from Father Vance | |
Three weeks ago today, I lost a good friend of mine here in Boise. Mark Raper, long time Canonist and Chancellor of the Diocese, was working in his office at Sacred Heart Parish in the early afternoon, and collapsed very suddenly. He was Stepfather to one of our Seniors here at BK, and last Friday, I was indescribably honored to preach the Homily at his Funeral Mass. As sure and confident as my faith in our loving God is, it is still challenged by the experience of sudden and unexplainable loss. I know that my emotions are affected by the season of Autumn as well. As I watch the weather turn cooler, and the trees begin to drop their leaves and sink into the death of the coming Winter, my thoughts are always turned to the reality of our mortality, and the need to pray for those we have lost. Even my consciousness of the approaching celebration of Halloween figures into my emotional life.
Memento Mori is a Latin phrase that translates “remember your mortality,” or even more starkly, “remember your death.” It is a very common and standard phrase in both ancient Pagan philosophy as well as Christian spirituality. Visually, the idea is captured in art through the use of the images of skull and bones, wilting flowers, a coffin or the hourglass. It is no stretch to assume that these ideas and images have contributed greatly to the iconography of Halloween. But as with so many elements of popular culture, there are deep realities and profound truths hidden (too often completely forgotten) beneath the icons and symbols.
Memento Mori reminds us of the reality of mortality and the transitory nature of human life. But at an even deeper level, it should call us to an appreciation of the sacredness of the present moment. The reality is that our loved ones who have passed away have gone through an experience that awaits each one of us, and to keep that in mind can be helpful, if challenging at the same time. It can help us invest the present moment with the eternal significance that it has, not because of us, but because of God. Each passing moment is, ultimately, all we have to choose, to pray, and to live our deepest faith in the world. That is the logical and faithful conclusion of Memento Mori.
Here at BK, I love being surrounded with the youth, vitality, health and energy of our students. One of the reasons I have sustained such a long career in Secondary Schools is precisely because of all that energy and vitality. The young women and men that I am blessed to minister among have kept me young! And yet, as we have been tragically reminded this past Summer, young and otherwise healthy people pass away too. Death plays no favorites, which makes each and every moment of life an indescribable blessing. My prayer for myself in the face of loss, grief and mourning is to never squander the present moment, because at the end of the day, that is all I have. The good news is that Christ is there in each unfolding present moment, as well as there when we make the transition from this life to the next.
Bill Keane, the Cartoonist responsible for “The Family Circus,” was credited with the following: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, that’s why we call it the present.”
The Roman Poet Horace is credited with the much used Latin phrase Carpe Diem, usually translated as “Seize the day.”
Memento Mori, and live each moment to its fullest. Squeeze the significance, the meaning and holiness from each moment. It doesn’t matter if the moment is happy or sad, challenging or easy. God is present, and you are called to see him. As we say each morning at BK: “Help me to see Jesus in others, and help others see Jesus in me.”

Each week Bishop Kelly faculty and staff nominate students, and students nominate faculty and staff, who have demonstrated the BK Way attributes of Faith, Safe and Caring Place, Academic Excellence, Activities, Honor, Generosity, Community, and Partnership.
Congratulations to this week's Knights of the Week!

Ryder Bordner
Activities, Community
Ryder deserves student of the week because he's a student-athlete that stands out in the BK community. Not only is he exceptionally athletic, but he's also a genuine human being who makes other people smile just because of his presence. According to Jeremy Boone, "If your presence doesn't make an impact, your absence won't make a difference." And Ryder's "absence" at BK would definitely "make a difference!"

Sarah Jimenez
Academic Excellence
Sarah works so hard in the classroom and is very committed to her studies. She asks great questions and contributes positively to class. Sarah is a bright spot in our day! She is always smiling and kind to others.

BK Staff of the Week
Mr. Mark Peters
Safe and Caring Place, Community
- Mr. Peters is a great teacher. He is always caring and cares about everyone and that everyone gets along. He is always there to support others. He always makes my day with his jokes. Mr. Peters is always positive no matter what. I always see Jesus in him everyday.
- Mr Peters just always makes everybody feel welcome. He always is a really fun person to have as a teacher, and he makes class feel very welcoming and fun.

Tux and Drape Photos

All seniors will be individually photographed at Bishop Kelly by Parker Portraits on October 12, 2022 from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.. This is a day with no scheduled classes.
There are still a few spots available, please send your senior to the front office to sign up.
Time slots will be given to students in advance, and they will be determined by the order in which people are signed up.
There is no cost to the families for these photos. The only cost will be if you choose to order prints. Parker Portraits will submit the picture directly to Bishop Kelly. If for some reason your student can’t attend this day, there will be an additional makeup day offered in November. More details to come on that date.
Parker Portraits will be taking tux/drape photos for the yearbook and class composite. Additionally, you can choose to have your student photographed in a graduation gown. You will just need to indicate on the same Google form if you would like this picture. The cost for a graduation gown photo is a $15 sitting fee. Please note that this additional gown picture option is only available during the October date.
A few weeks after the sitting, you will receive information with a link to access the proofs. If you had a gown photo taken, you will also be able to view those, and can choose to order those photos at that time. The only additional cost is if you decide to order photos.
Remember that all this information and more can be found
on the Senior Dashboard on BK.org!

UPDATED INFORMATION
Yearbook Picture Retakes

Picture retakes will be on Tuesday, October 11th from 7:45 a.m.-9:00 a.m. This is a late start day for students.
We had originally planned for Wednesday, but with the testing day and potentially difficult transportation for freshmen, we asked Parker Portraits to do those on campus on Tuesday. Students will still need to sign up on THIS GOOGLE FORM if they plan to do retakes, or if they didn't have a photo on Registration Day. If you've already signed up, you don't need to complete the form again.
Senior Tux/Drape photos are still scheduled for Wednesday, October 12th, so no change with those.
