Academic excellence and “…instruction that meets individual needs” is an Edina core belief that has been at the heart of Normandale’s work for 31 years! This year Normandale staff are focused on helping Normandale students in grades K-5 grow their reading skills. As part of this effort, I am looking to engage reading volunteers to work with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students one-on-one and in small groups. Because we do not introduce English instruction until grade three, it is difficult to use non-French speakers in our primary classrooms. However, I know we have a large pool of English-speaking community members that are educators and/or are interested in helping students build their reading skills. If you have an interest in literacy, some free time and want to learn about literacy alongside our literacy coach, please contact me at [email protected] for more information.

EVERY MEAL PARTNERSHIP

Healthy eating is very important for children. Research shows that children who eat regular, nutritious meals are more likely to attend school and be engaged in learning.  As a part of this, we are excited to partner with Every Meal to offer a free weekend meal program to all our students.

Every Meal is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to fight child hunger through community and school partnerships. They strive to make a difference in children’s lives by focusing on food gaps like weekends, school breaks, and summer when they can’t receive food in school.

  • Free for all families
  • No qualifications required
  • Students enrolled in the program will receive a 4-5 pound bag of nutritious, nonperishable food each week
  • Every Meal does not collect information from families; privacy is protected
  • Families may choose to participate in the program anytime throughout the school year
  • Families may choose from a variety of different weekend food bag options

Please sign up here. You may also contact Lisa Rapke Hoffman, School Social Worker at [email protected]

MEET THE INTERN

ANDREA GALIAN-CARCELES - KINDERGARTEN

ABOUT ME: My name is Andrea, I am 20 years old and I am Spanish. My family and I come from a small region in the south of Spain (very beautiful) called Murcia ;). In this city I studied from the age of 3 to 17 in a bilingual school in French. At the age of 17 I went to study at the University of Strasbourg, in France. I studied the degrees of pedagogy and Hispanic philology, and this year I finished both university degrees!. In my family I am an only child but I am a very familiar person, therefore, although I have studied in a different country, we have different rhythms of life and although I cannot talk to them every day, I am still close to my family. I like to go for walks, to know new places and to see beautiful landscapes.

IN THE US: Going to the United States for a whole year is an opportunity that I don't know if I'll be able to repeat it, so I would like to enjoy it a lot. I would like to travel to see other cities like New York or Los Angeles, I want to meet new people and learn about their culture. On the other hand, while I am in Edina I will enjoy and learn thanks to the wonderful program that allows me to pursue the profession of my dreams at the age of 20 and for which I have been preparing for these three years.

MY FAVORITE FOOD: I like to eat everything and try new recipes, let's see, within a limit... I don't like fried insects and thinks like that... ;). I always tend to eat healthy, although from time to time I do not reject a good hamburger or pizza ;) . Personally, I do not consider myself a good cooker, although it is true that some typical recipes from my region (Murcia) and from my country (Spain) although it is true that I usually cook some typical recipes from my region (Murcia) and from my country (Spain) and I think they come out good. My favorite dish is the Spanish omelette, also called"tortilla de patatas" . When I will be there, if my family wants, I'll cook it for them.

I AM EXCITED ABOUT: The simple fact of spending a year in the United States excites me. In addition, I have never lived with a host family and it is an experience that I have always wanted to live.

IN THE COMMUNITY

HEALING CIRCLES

Artwork from hundreds of Edina Public Schools students will be projected onto the Edina Community Center building Oct. 7 for “Healing Circles,” an innovative public art initiative promoting student self-expression and conversations around mental health.

The Healing Circles project is a collaboration between Edina Public Schools and the City of Edina’s Arts & Culture Commission.

Students in grades K-12 have been creating circles filled with colorful designs, symbols and favorite images in crayon, colored pencil and other media. Elementary school students already have submitted hundreds of designs as part of an art curriculum created by Edina art teacher Leanne French-Amara.

Watch the projection of Healing Circles from 6:45-9:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at the

Edina Community Center building, 5701 Normandale Road.
