Puente al Inglés para Niños | |
By Jacki Gillespie
We are settling into 2024 very well. Our attendance has been great and the kids are growing more confident in their English with every class. Learning a second language can be challenging and rewarding. Keeping our classes fun helps keep our students interested.
We would love to add another volunteer teacher to take on a class of our waitlist students. If you are interested please contact me at puentealingles@palapasociety.org.

Continuing with our “Focus on Volunteers” series.
The following is an interview with Wanda Piccini, Monday library volunteer.
PB: How did you come to Todos Santos?
WP: My brother lived in Pescadero for several years and when I came to visit I fell in love with the clean flagstone streets in the downtown area.
PB: Why did you want to volunteer at the library?
WP: A good friend suggested that I give something back to the community. She said it would also be a good way to meet people.
PB: Did it fulfill your expectations?
WP: It has far surpassed my expectations.
PB: What are your favorite things about volunteering at the library?
WP: I love talking to people and helping them find the books they are looking for. The library is not just about books and reading, we are also a clearing house of information about the community.
PB: What section of the library do you gravitate towards?
WP: I like fiction and mystery. My friend tried to get me interested in Science Fiction, but I don’t like reading anything that isn’t real.

By Anaid Olvera Martinez, Director
Did you know that the world's first library dates back to the 7th century BC? It was located in the city of Nineveh, Iraq, and was built under the orders of King Asurbanipal. The purpose of the library was to safeguard stone tablets and papyrus scrolls so that they could be consulted.
More than 2500 years later, modern libraries continue to fulfill their objective of safeguarding and preserving materials that we can access to inform, entertain, and educate ourselves.
Today, we can find various types of libraries, including specialized, university, and public or community libraries. The Palapa Society has two libraries that serve our community in Todos Santos, El Pescadero, and surrounding areas.
