Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

February 26 - March 2, 2024

The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned to occur in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers should expect potential delays when traveling in this area and should visit 511virginia.org for real-time information on work zones and lane closures. All work is subject to change based on weather and other factors.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY)


I-495 North


Monday, February 26, through Thursday, February 29, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single right lane closure on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for drainage, excavation, sound wall and embankment work.


Monday, February 26, through Friday, March 1, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Alternating single mobile lane closure on northbound I-495 throughout the project corridor as needed for maintenance work and traffic management.


Tuesday, February 27, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Triple right lane closures on northbound I-495 from Old Dominion Drive to Live Oak Drive for hauling materials and drilling posts. A single lane closure will begin at 9:30 p.m., followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. and a triple lane closure at 11 p.m.


Friday, March 1, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Alternating single mobile lane closure on northbound I-495 throughout the project corridor as needed for maintenance work and traffic management.


I-495 South


Monday, February 26, through Thursday, February 29, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Single right lane closure on southbound I-495 between Live Oak Drive and Dulles Toll Road for drainage, sound wall, embankment and excavation work.


Monday, February 26, and Tuesday, February 27, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The slip ramp from the access road (the I-495 South lanes to the right of the barrier) to I-495 South approaching the Georgetown Pike Bridge will be closed for setting steel beams. Motorists traveling on the access road will be directed through the traffic signal at Georgetown Pike, and take the ramp back down to merge onto I-495 South.


Monday, February 26, through Friday, March 1, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Alternating single mobile lane closure on southbound I-495 throughout the project corridor as needed for maintenance work and traffic management.


Monday, February 26, through Wednesday, February 28, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single right lane closure on southbound I-495 from Live Oak Drive to Lewinsville Road for girder erection and soil boring work.


Friday, March 1, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Alternating single mobile lane closure on southbound I-495 throughout the project corridor as needed for maintenance work and traffic management.

GEORGE WASHINGTON MEMORIAL PARKWAY INTERCHANGE


Monday, February 26, and Tuesday, February 27, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The on-ramp from George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 will be closed for drainage work. Motorists should follow the signed detour, which crosses the American Legion Bridge into Maryland. Learn more about the work and detour here.


Monday, February 26, through Friday, March 1, 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The exit ramp from I-495 South to George Washington Memorial Parkway (Exit 43) will be closed for drainage work. Motorists should follow the signed detour to Georgetown Pike to access I-495 North and continue to the ramp to George Washington Memorial Parkway.

LIVE OAK DRIVE


Monday, February 26, through Saturday, March 2, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Live Oak Drive will be reduced to a single lane near the swim club and bridge for waterline work. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

BALLS HILL ROAD


Tuesday, February 27, and Wednesday, February 28, 11:59 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Periodic traffic stoppages of up to 30 minutes each at the intersection with Georgetown Pike for temporary signal work. Following each stoppage, the intersection will reopen to clear traffic before the next stoppage is implemented. In the event of inclement weather, this operation will be postponed to the following night.

GEORGETOWN PIKE


Monday, February 26, through Friday, March 1, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single right lane closure on westbound Georgetown Pike at the bridge over I-495 for backfill work.


Tuesday, February 27, and Wednesday, February 28, 11:59 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Periodic traffic stoppages of up to 30 minutes each at the intersection with Balls Hill Road for temporary signal work. Following each stoppage, the intersection will reopen to clear traffic before the next stoppage is implemented. In the event of inclement weather, this operation will be postponed to the following night.

DULLES CORRIDOR INTERCHANGE 


Dulles Toll Road


Monday, February 26, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single right lane closure on westbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) from Route 123 to the I-495 interchange for materials delivery.


Monday, February 26, through Thursday, February 29, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Right shoulder closure on westbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) from Idylwood Road (VA 695) to the I-495 interchange for trenching and conduit work.


Monday, February 26, through Friday, March 1, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single mobile lane closure on Route 123 under the Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) overpass for boring work.

Traffic Changes

New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road


Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange.

George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495


Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.


Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scott's Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge. 

 

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
