Elizabeth Pitcairn and Red Violin Return for Weekend of Performances

The Susanville Symphony will again bring world-renowned violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn and her Mendelssohn Red Violin to Susanville for performances March 8th, at 7:00 and March 9th, at 2:00.

The famed Red Violin, which belonged to Felix Mendelssohn, is over three hundred-years old.

Symphony Artistic Director, and Conductor Ben Wade explained that the violin, which is one of the rarest instruments in the world, was owned by the Mendelssohn family and then auctioned off by Sotheby’s.

21 Horses Seized from Ravendale

Property as Result of Warrant Service

Twenty-one horses were seized February 12th, after the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office responded to an address on Marr Road in Ravendale to execute a search warrant for animal cruelty.

“The seizure of the horses stems from a month’s long animal neglect investigation,” explains LCSO Sergeant Michael Loflin, who said that the Sheriff’s Office first responded to the property in August, 2023 for a welfare check on the horses.

“The horses were emaciated and lacked proper food, water and shelter. In addition, many of the horses had pre-existing injuries that needed medical attention.”

According to Loflin, the owner of the horses was given orders by the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Officer to provide better care for the animals.

“However, the owner of the horses did not fulfill the requirements set forth, which resulted in two horses dying on the property.”

Animal Control continued to respond to the property several times per week to check on the remaining horses. The conditions of the horses were documented and photographed.

In early December, Lassen Veterinarian Services assisted the Sheriff’s Office by sending a Registered Veterinarian Technician to the property to assess the condition of each horse.

The RVT recommended that the horses be removed from the property for their health and safety. At this point, the decision was made by the Sheriff’s Office to take over responsibility for the horses.

“Animal Control arranged for food and water to be delivered to the property on a weekly basis to provide for the animals until manpower and resources for removing such a large number of horses could be arranged.”

The Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the Bureau of Land Management to help with the seizure of the horses. That agency provided several horse wranglers, livestock trailers, feed and paneling to remove the horses from the property.

The horses, which were transported to the Lassen County Fairgrounds and evaluated by a licensed veterinarian, are continuing to be cared for by Lassen County Animal Control, along with the assistance of Lassen County Animal Shelter staff.

On February 14th, at the request of the owner of the animals, a post-seizure hearing was conducted. As a result, the hearing officer ruled in favor of the seizure. By statute, the owner of the animals have fourteen days to come into compliance and meet the recommendations of the Sheriff’s Office.

Additionally, it was ruled that the animal owners are liable for all costs incurred by the Sheriff’s Office for the removal and care of the animals. If these conditions are not achieved, the horses will be forfeited. At which point, the horses will be rehomed.

This case is still under investigation.

“The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank BLM, Lassen Veterinarian Services, Modoc Veterinarian Clinic, Lassen County Fairgrounds and Lassen County Animal Shelter for their assistance with this case. We would also like to recognize the diligent work by our Animal Control Officer.”

Hey Kids! Start Polishing Up Your Act for the Children’s Fair Lip Sync Battle

Now is the time for kids aged 6 to 19 to start getting their act together for the big lip sync battle being held as part of the 2024 Children’s Fair in May.

This year the date of the event has lent itself to a space theme, “May the Fourth be With You,” playing on the iconic Star Wars saying May the Force be With You.

The lip sync battle will be a major feature of this year’s fair, with local talent taking the stage to pantomime to cool music. You don’t really have to sing or dance, and no special talent is required, just your energy, enthusiasm, and the desire to have fun!

The low-cost event, held at the Lassen County Fairgrounds, is a favorite among local families, with a host of groups and organizations participating to make the fun-filled day a success.

Children’s Fair Coordinator James Hall explains that the purpose of the fair is, “to provide an opportunity for families to spend a pleasant day together that will hopefully reduce tobacco, substance, and child abuse within Lassen County.”

This year the fair will feature a big selection of community organization booths providing resource information and activities for students along with a vehicle display and face painting.

Lumber Chiefs Forecast Boom

February 23, 1935

Lumber mills in Susanville, Westwood and other local districts will start operation March 1st. The officials forecast a boom in the lumber industry.

The Fruit Growers Supply Company and the Lassen Lumber and Box Company have awarded contracts to the Red River Lumber Company, which will truck logs to Susanville March 1st, pending the completion of a logging railroad from the Red River holdings into Susanville.

The recent cold snap, and the accompanying snow, will delay completion of the logging road, but will not affect the beginning of the season.
