Clubs join together for classroom supply project

Kiwanians are always looking for ways they can serve the children in our community that are relevant to today’s needs.  Recently, there has been several articles about teachers using their own money to replenish classroom supplies and how the parents are already stretched just keeping up with clothing and feeding of these students.  It was also learned that after the holidays, going into second semester, the classrooms are in the most need of some new supplies.

And so, the idea of helping children by helping and showing appreciation for our teachers by providing them with some classroom supplies started.

The members of Capital City, Southeast and South Pointe Kiwanis clubs in Lincoln chose three schools to pilot this project.  They first polled the teachers about which supplies were most needed and then found funding to gather the requested items. The most requested supply were pencils….the “good ones”, not just any pencil.  Next on the lists were items like Crayola crayons, Expo dry erase markers, and Ziplock bags.  These items and others on the lists were either purchased by Kiwanians, outside donors and grants or donated by members, businesses, and other individuals.
In early February several totes, bags and storage boxes were filled with the items Kiwanis members had collected and delivered to Belmont Elementary, Randolph Elementary and Pyrtle Elementary schools. Each school was provided with around $300 or more in supplies. (Belmont Elementary received two boxes of supplies since their enrollment is twice that of most elementary schools.) The teachers and/or administrators were overjoyed with the gifts and the noted appreciation from this Classroom Supply Project.

The Kiwanis clubs involved are hoping to make this an annual event and that other clubs consider picking up this project as a way to serve the children in our community. If you are interested in helping, or would like more information on setting up this project, go to Kiwaniscapitalcity.org and click on the contact us option, or contact Sandy Scheinost at sschein51@gmail.com.

Donna Bean, a 25-year member, emceed the occasion and it was a treat to have her wonderful family all in attendance. Also, comments were made by members Margie Mitchell, Chris Sobotka and Will Ogle. Many great memories of days gone by were shared, along with the acknowledgement of the thousands of individuals this club has helped.
Congratulations was also sent to the club by Camp Courageous. The camp has been fortunate to be involved in the Club for almost all their 50-years. Several members were among the first volunteers at Camp Courageous, laying sod in 1973, just before the first campers came in 1974. The camp's dear friend, Mel Holubar, was honored for being a 50-year active member. Mel is a wonderful person, who was one of those original sod layers at Camp Courageous. Pictured is Mel receiving the 50-years Legion of Honor, with his daughters (from left) Bonnie Holubar and Kathleen Holubar Sanchez, all of Marion.

Wayne receives microgrant

The Kiwanis Club of Wayne discovered through their community survey that more than 170 children between the ages of three and five were on waiting lists for preschools in their area. With the help of a Children’s Fund microgrant, they are partnering with the new Life Tree Academy preschool to get more kids into an early learning environment. Grant funds will go toward the purchase of books, mats and beanbag chairs, art supplies, games and puzzles to make a creative and educational space within the new preschool.
Kiwanians will help install the equipment and plan to visit the school every month to read to the preschoolers. Club board member Teresa Dredge hopes the children thrive in their new preschool and that the program can eventually include even more students.

Missouri Valley's SLP clubs hold drives

The West Harrison K-Kids recently made nearly 40 dog toys. The group is sponsored by the Greater Missouri Valley Kiwanis Club. Lisa Kuhlman from the Harrison County Humane Society (far right in photo) accepted the toys for the shelter.

In January, these kids led a coin drive to end all coin drives. In two weeks, they collected over $500. Half of the money raised went to Children's Hospital in the form of toys and games for the kids. The other half is going to a family who recently moved from the West Harrison district to a small town not too far away. The family was at the grandmother's funeral and their house burned to the ground right after Christmas. So, $250 is being sent to the family as the kids know the kids involved. Just another reason this group is so amazing.

Next up is planning Teacher Appreciation activities, Earth Day and the new memorial garden at the school.

The Kiwanis club also sponsored the Missouri Valley K-Kids. In January, these kids had a coin drive and they are using their funds for a pollinator garden at the school. In February, they made Valentine's Day cards for Children's Hospital. This month's meeting will be making plans for their 'Week of Fun' that will be the week of March 13. They were to decide which day is what and Friday, St Patrick's Day ends the festivities.
Also in the works is Teacher Appreciation week activities, Earth Day and getting going with the pollinator garden.

Nevada sponsored SLP makes dog toys

Members of Nevada Key Club do a service project at a meeting once a month. At a February meeting, members made dog toys to donate to the Story County Animal Shelter. They brought tee shirts to use in making the toys. They watched a video and followed the directions. It was a lot of fun!
