Flood Protection Works for North Westside Fire Rescue Boathouse

If you visited  Killiney Beach Community Park  this week you would have seen a work crew doing some emergency flood protection work for the boathouse. The BC Emergency Program approved funding to install rip-rap and gravel around the shoreline area of the walkway to the North Westside Fire Rescue boathouse. This work will help protect against erosion and undermining of the walkway during high water levels of Okanagan Lake. (Boathouse works pictured)

The North Westside Fire Rescue hosts their Annual BBQ Fundraiser on Aug. 11th in the amenities area at La Casa. Details coming soon.

Residents can begin removing sandbags from private property

News Release No. 41 Central Okanagan, B.C. — The Emergency Operations Centre is demobilizing most of its flood protection measures and it advises residents to consider doing the same.
Residents who have sandbags on their properties can return them to authorized locations as found at www.cordemergency.ca/ma p .

Sandbags will be accepted until the end of Thursday, June 28.
Sandbags should be returned with the sand still in the bags.

Local authorized North Westside locations include:
·        Short’s Creek Fire hall (7355 Westside Rd.)
·        Wilson’s Landing Fire hall (2396 Westside Rd.)

Residents dealing with sandbags on private property should take precautions when working around stagnant water as sandbags that have been sitting in water can contain mould. Residents should wear N95 respirators, nitrile gloves and rubber boots and thoroughly wash hands and clothes after handling the bags.

Under no circumstances should sandbags be emptied into creeks, lakes, wetland, beaches or other watercourses as outlined in the Water Sustainability Act. The impact can destroy fish habitat and affect drinking water supply, infrastructure, flood control, navigation and recreational activities. It is also illegal.

For more information, visit www.cordemergency.ca , sign up for e-updates, or call the information line at 250-469-8490.

If you would like sand for any project you are doing you are welcome to help yourself to the unused sand brought in for sandbagging at the Killiney Beach Fire Hall. The sandpile is located to the left at the top of the access road.

RDCO News Release:
Stage 2 Outdoor Water Restrictions Return

The annual return to twice weekly outdoor water restrictions starts tomorrow for the six water systems operated by the Regional District of Central Okanagan.

Each year from June 16 th until September 15 th , Stage 2 water restrictions are in place for customers of the Star Place, Falcon Ridge, Killiney Beach, Sunset Ranch, Upper Fintry-Shalal Road-Valley of the Sun and Westshore water systems. Communications Officer Bruce Smith says “Stage 2 means if needed, outdoor watering is restricted on those six systems to two days each week. RDCO water customers with even number addresses may irrigate outdoors on Saturday and Tuesday while those with odd addresses may only water outside on Sunday and Wednesday.”

Smith adds, “If you don’t need to water gardens and lawns on your allotted day and time period, please don’t waste water. By following the outdoor watering restrictions residents help ensure reservoirs are replenished and there’s an adequate water supply for everyone.”

The Regional District Water Systems Regulations Bylaw No. 1370 also outlines the hours for automated and manual outdoor irrigation. Customers with automated sprinklers should only water between midnight and 6:00 am on their designated day, while those with manual outdoor irrigation must restrict their watering to between 6:00 am and 11:00 am and 6:00 pm and midnight on their respective irrigation day.

The rest of the year, between September 16 th and June 15 th – Stage 1 Restrictions are in place allowing customers to water outdoors on alternating days based on their odd or even street address number.

While fines are possible for those watering when they shouldn’t, raising awareness successfully results in voluntary compliance. The Regional District water systems provide service to almost 950 connections in the six water system areas.

Customers may also sign up there to receive email notifications of any water advisories or special maintenance works affecting their water system.
