Supporting Veterans Families |
At The WorkPlace, we honor veterans throughout the year, but Veterans Day is a special time for us to reflect on how we can best support those who have served our country. As an organization, we provide critical services and resources to aid veterans.
Through our Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, we provide financial assistance and support to low-income veterans and veteran families in our community who are facing or at risk of homelessness. We aim to help veterans get into stable housing, which is often the crucial first step toward building a new life post-service.
We also offer tailored employment services designed specifically for veterans seeking to translate their military skills and experience into civilian careers. Our counselors work closely with each veteran to identify transferable skills, provide job training if needed, polish resumes and interview skills, and offer ongoing career guidance.

The WorkPlace Celebrates National Apprenticeship Week! |
The WorkPlace celebrated National Apprenticeship Week on November 15th with an engaging event that brought together employers, apprentices, and community members at CT State Community College Housatonic.
The event featured a dynamic panel of employers from local companies including Straton Industries, Xcel Tool and Manufacturing, and Paragon Medical. These industry leaders discussed the immense value of registered apprenticeship programs and how intentional mentorship cultivates loyalty and specialized skills in the next generation of workers.
A highlight of the event was honoring Coherent Corporation in Monroe with the ApprenticeWorks Champion Award. This recognition acknowledged Coherent's outstanding commitment and contribution to developing registered apprentices in the community.
Additionally, we showcased innovative new technologies that the ApprenticeWorks program utilizes to provide immersive, hands-on learning experiences. This includes virtual reality training simulations and 3D printing technologies that enhanced their career-track competencies.
The interactive activities and discussions allowed community members, employers, future apprentices, and more to see first-hand the impact of apprenticeship programs. As we look to 2024, we are eager to expand our offerings and train more apprentices using this effective earn-and-learn model.

RemoteWorks Gives Connecticut Residents a Competitive Edge in the Virtual Workforce |

With more companies embracing remote work, Connecticut residents now have an exciting opportunity to develop skills for telecommuting jobs. The WorkPlace's RemoteWorks program aims to help residents re-enter the workforce with training tailored to virtual roles.
The intensive 4-week program covers key areas like customer service, sales, and technology-related skills that translate well to remote work. Participants get access to LinkedIn Learning's online platform for additional training materials and certifications. They also receive support from professional job search coaches to polish their resumes, practice interviewing, and master networking in the digital age.
To qualify for RemoteWorks, applicants must be Connecticut residents who are unemployed or underemployed. With the right training and guidance, the program can launch residents into promising remote careers with leading employers. As more companies go virtual, RemoteWorks gives residents a competitive edge to thrive in the future of work.

Overcoming Barriers to Employment for the Formerly Incarcerated |
When individuals are released from incarceration, one of the biggest obstacles they face is finding stable employment. Their criminal record often prevents them from finding employment. However, there is untapped potential and immense value in hiring individuals who are transitioning from incarceration.
Returning citizens possess a unique set of skills, talent and resilience that can greatly benefit employers. Many have developed valuable skills during their time in prison, making them assets in various industries. Their diverse backgrounds and life experiences bring fresh perspectives to the workplace, and their motivation for change often drives them to excel in their jobs.
The WorkPlace’s Re-Entry Program plays a pivotal role in facilitating the hiring process and bridging the gap between employers and those re-entering the workforce Our re-entry staff goes the extra mile to ensure successful workforce integration. We provide services like job placement, skill development, mentoring, and integration support to make hiring re-entry individuals a streamlined and successful process.
