The Dog Ate My Homework

(As an adult, excuses no longer work)

A number of years ago, I was on a week long road trip visiting many stores, and driving almost 2,000 miles. While the trip was productive and lucrative, I was beat down. I was doing 15 - 16 hour days, and could not keep up with all that I had to do.

I remember that I had a customer get in touch with me on this road trip. He was quite upset. While I don't remember now what I did wrong, I remember that I had messed up.

My response to him was that I will fix the problem. Then I went on telling him why the problem occurred - I've been on this long road trip, working long hours, blah, blah, blah.

It made him angry. He didn't care what my reasons were for messing up. He had a business to run and he had an expectation of what I would do to support his business (and I failed).

This was a learning experience for me. I realized my immediate reaction to problems, is to give excuses. This is a hard habit to break.

While I've not broken this totally (as some of you know), I am so much better.

What my customer wanted was an apology (not an excuse), followed up by a plan of action on how I would fix it. I'm learning.
