Spring Ferry Schedule & More

Dear Karen,

It’s that time of the year when many of us return to the Pines. Here is some information that I hope helps with your planning.

SFS New Spring Schedules

Following are Sayville Ferry Service’s Spring schedules covering Friday, March 17th through Wednesday May 24th.

Over the past several days, I have been working directly with Ken Stein to make two significant modifications to the Late Spring schedule.

Considering substantial changes to the Long Island Railroad schedule and the expected impact that the post-pandemic hybrid work week may have on travel patterns, these two material accommodations are reflected for the first time,

  • The last boat on Thursday evenings has been moved substantially later to 8:15PM to enable office commuters to leave Penn Station as late as 6:28PM and still get to their homes the same day.

  • The last boat on Friday evening has also been moved later in the evening to 9:15PM, once again to allow office commuters to work a full day and still make it in time to begin the weekend on a Friday evening rather having to wait until Saturday morning.

I am grateful for these later Thursday and Friday evening boats which will begin late April/early May. They are in direct response to the two most frequent requests I have received (among many others as well) over the past 2 ½ years. Please keep in mind, ridership is important to maintain these later boats in future years.

Membership Drive

The membership drive is underway! Thank you for those who have already renewed your membership. To renew your membership, visit the new and improved Membership Portal by accessing your member profile here. Are you a new homeowner? Click here to join FIPPOA! Are you a renter or contractor? Join as an Associate member!

Your membership helps enable us to continue to support the evolving needs of our community -- to protect, preserve and improve our beautiful slice of paradise.

Memberships renewed before March 1st will receive your wagon sticker to the mailing address that is on file. For Memberships renewed after March 1st, your wagon stickers will be available to pick up at the Spring Membership Meeting. Please be sure to verify your mailing address on file by accessing your member profile.

Wagon Rack Accessibility

Due to the growing trust in FIPPOA, we have more members than years past. We will now be enforcing a “Sticker-Per-Membership” policy (except multi-property memberships which remain entitled to two). If you are a homeowner and need additional stickers outside of the first courtesy sticker, please encourage a household member or a friend to join FIPPOA as an Associate member and you can utilize their sticker. In addition, if you are replacing an old wagon, please be sure to keep in mind that the wagon rack does have sizing constraints. Visit the FIPPOA website “Resident Resources” to view our recommended wagon models that fulfill these measurement requirements.

Infested Tree Take Down – The Pines Conservation Society (PCS) in Collaboration with FIPPOA/The Pines Foundation (TPF)

Each year PCS, in collaboration with FIPPOA/TPF and the National Park Service (NPS), removes infested, dead, or dying trees from the Pines rights-of-way (ROW), defined as six feet on either side of a public walk. The program has helped combat the spread of environmentally dangerous southern pine beetles. The NPS reports that our rapid response and continued collaboration have been key in slowing it. The culling tactic has been a success. In 2016, the first year, 150 trees were downed.

The identified trees will be removed in early March by Bartlett Tree Experts. If you have dead or dying pine trees on the property that are outside of the ROW, now is an opportunity to work with Bartlett. Please contact Kevin Siragusa as soon as possible at 516-424-8635 or email: Ksiragusa@bartlett.com

Pines Conservation Society - Annual Tree Sale

Spring is coming and it’s time to plant! Over the past many years, PCS has helped homeowners plant more than 4,000 trees. Tree planting is important to maintain the diversity of the Pine’s fragile ecosystem. Trees are purchased directly from the nursery and delivered to the Pines freight dock. By ordering in bulk, PCS passes the savings on to you.

Please click here to order your trees.

A special thank you to the PCS Board of Directors and the many hard working community volunteers.

When Does It Open?

I get this question a lot, particularly this time of the year. Here are a few answers, and as is always advised, please call or check relevant websites for updates and changes.

The Pines Liquor Shop: open Saturday, March 18th and the weekend beginning Friday, March 24th (11AM-3PM). Check for additional days and hours on their website.

The Pines Pantry: soft opening March 24th; official opening, March 31st.

Pines Pizza & Sip N Twirl: April 7th with breakfast served at 7AM & with cocktails at Sip pouring at 6PM.

Weekly household garbage curbside pickup has resumed on Mondays through March, with bulk/recyclables on Wednesdays. Thursday household garbage pickup starts April 6th. The full garbage collection calendar and guidelines can be found here. I strongly encourage you to notify carting@brownieny.com with a copy to 311@fippoa.org if a pickup was missed.

I look forward to seeing you all in the community and to welcoming in the new season. We have lots of exciting news to report as the season unfolds. Stay tuned!

Robert Weber

1963 - 2022

On April 22nd the community will dedicate a bench in the harbor to Robert Weber, a beloved Pines resident and contractor who passed away from ALS on October 23, 2022 at the age of 59. Robert was a warmhearted, self-effacing person who came to the Pines in 2011 to manage the commercial properties’ physical plant and never left. He was deeply loyal to his friends and his community, forever coming to the rescue of homeowners and business owners in need of help.

The 1pm dedication will be followed by an event at which people will be encouraged to share their memories of him. Further details are available at https://bit.ly/3ya2WAP.
