Surviving the Apocalypse
Rev. Joanna Fontaine Crawford

You're not being melodramatic. We are facing existential threats to democracy, human rights, and the earth itself. But there are some keys to surviving and even thriving.

Share the Plate
Income Needn't Matter
The Social Justice Ministry team chose Hospice Austin as the recipient of Share the Plate donations in October. The nonprofit provides hospice care and palliative care in our five-county region regardless of the patients' ability to pay.

Hospice Austin provides care for people with life-limiting illnesses and for their families. Services are offered in hospitals, other care facilities and patients' homes as well as Hospice Austin's Christopher House. You can find out more at hospiceaustin.org.

You can contribute to Share the Plate during Sunday services or donate on our website. All checks and envelopes marked “Share the Plate” and half of all undesignated cash during the services will be donated to recipients. Or go to https://www.liveoakuu.org/community/donate/

New Member Corner
Here at Live Oak we love our new members, and we'll be profiling them here in the newsletter.

A warm welcome to April Huff and family!

April's clan are a military family that has been stationed in six different states (NC, WA, AL, AK, NY, and TX) and found themselves here thanks to a military program, Futures Command, teaching soldiers to code. They moved to our area in April and, one day when driving down El Salido, April realized that Live Oak was less than a mile from their house – it was simply meant to be!

April's youngsters were excited to find out that the UU churches here had playgrounds and a lot of kids, so they’ll fit right in here at Live Oak. The family also includes two cats and a really sweet, high energy dog they suspect is an Alaskan sled dog.

April herself loves to knit, tie dye, garden, read, bake, hike, and bike. She had a 15 year career in radio and TV, and can help out with the audio/video equipment; not to mention she reads aloud very well and would love to read for the Big Idea sometime.

We're so glad to have all of you here April!

HELP DISTRIBUTE FOOD TO OUR NEIGHBORS
Live Oak Church will be distributing food to our neighbors at Fresh Food for All and need volunteers to help.
This month, on Friday, October 21st, Fresh Food For All participants will be able to select their own produce (Farmer's Market style), instead of having the prepackaged produce placed in their car trunks. We will need to help fill bags, direct traffic, weigh the food, and help people carry food to their cars. If you can help anytime on October 21st between 8:30 and 11AM. RSVP to Donna Durbin at: HCCM@liveoakuu.org

Let’s go Shopping
It’s time to grab your green bag or any shopping bag and help our neighbors. Bring food and other items for Hill Country Community Ministries (HCCM), our Fresh Food for All partner, to church and leave them in the Narthex. Personal care items are always on the list, including feminine hygiene products. The list of all needed items can be found here.

Get Your Live Oak Neighborhood
They're going fast!
Get your Live Oak Neighborhood! Easy! Free!
Live Oak is reaching out to our neighbors to encourage them to vote. Not only do we want them to vote, but we also want them to see Live Oak UU as a source of voting rights passion. So, we’re adopting neighborhoods around our church to drop off these door hangers. Read more

ANTI-RACIST TRAINING OPPORTUNITY
It's not enough to be not racist, you must be anti-racist.
Five of us on the Social Justice DEI team (diversity, equity, inclusion) will be attending an antiracist/Jubilee training that Wildflower UU is sponsoring. It's a great opportunity to dive deeper into the work of antiracism to learn and support our goal of adopting the 8th principle. All the UU churches in the Austin are partners in this including Live Oak.

Important details: It's all on zoom. There is money available for five more people to attend. (cost is $170.00 per person)
Schedule:
Friday, November 11 (6:00pm to 9:00pm CST);
Saturday, November 12 (9:00am to 8:30pm CST);
Sunday, November 13 (12:00pm to 6:00pm CST)
There will be breaks throughout the day.

This training will be facilitated by Paula Cole Jones, the woman who got the whole 8th Principle started. Click here for more information.

Can you help with "Red Bench" at Live Oak
Dec. 6, 6:30 pm?
iAct (Interfaith Action) is moving back to in-person events, and they would love to host a "Red Bench" gathering at Live Oak on Tuesday, December 6. Before I say yes, I need to know we have several people who can make this happen.

What's involved: we provide a simple vegetarian meal to all attendees. (In the past, we've done things like soups, baked potatoes, or casseroles.) We'll also need a team willing to clean up afterwards.

The Red Bench event brings people of all different religions together for a guided, respectful conversation about a particular topic, e.g. "Global Climate Crisis," "Love," "Racism." iAct provides the materials, leaders, etc. We just provide the space and a meal. Please let me know if you are able to help with this event at minister@liveoakuu.org.

Support Voters Favoring Abortion Rights and Environmental Justice
About two minutes a letter
Vote Forward announces a new campaign to increase turnout among voters who would favor abortion rights and environmental justice, but who may not vote. This is an experimental opportunity to see how letters influence Pennsylvania voters who have expressed pro-choice and environmental support.

Live Oak continues its Vote Forward campaign to reach voters in Texas who are registered but not likely to vote. Our goal is 500 letters and we’ve completed 400. You can participate by attending the Oct 23 event just after church service (don’t want to write? Instead stamp, address, seal envelopes) or by requesting a packet of 5 letters (about 2 minutes per letter). Sample letters, stamps, envelopes, instructions provided.

For more information, contact the LOUU Voting Rights Team.

Upcoming: Ted Lasso & Bowen Discussion Group
Mark your calendar! Beginning in October, Rev. Joanna will be showing episodes of Ted Lasso then leading a discussion group around the Bowen Family Systems concepts shown in the show -- things like triangulation, differentiation, etc. The group will meet in the library at 6:00pm on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. If you're interested, email minister@liveoakuu.org to reserve a spot.
