January 5 Meeting: Guest Artist, Marla Fields
Marla Fields will be our guest for the VAST January Meeting, on Thursday, January 5th and the title of her presentation is "Frank Reaugh - Landscape and Cattle Painter".  Marla will present film highlights from her documentary, Frank Reaugh: Pastel Poet of the Texas Plains that feature Reaugh (1860-1945), a key figure in the region's development of Visual Art and Art Education during the 19th Century.
As a freelance video producer and writer since 1994, Marla Fields  has been responsible for and assisted in the creative, pre-production, production, and post-production of various training,  promotional, and educational projects, both local and nationwide. With over 20 years of experience in overseeing numerous  productions from script-to-screen in the corporate arena, Frank  Reaugh: Pastel Poet of the Texas Plains is her first full-length documentary.

She began her Reaugh journey in 2010 by establishing non-profit status for her production and raising funds though small grants and  private donations. Since then, she has traveled the state thoroughly researching the artist and his students, recording key interviews,  and capturing hundreds of images including the landscapes, landmarks and, of course, the longhorns that Mr. Reaugh sketched  and treasured.

With the documentary complete, she is currently creating community events with organizations and institutions that share the  common goal of bringing more awareness to this Texas treasure.

Marla is a native Texan, born in Lake Jackson, and resides in Frisco,  Texas, just north of Dallas.

Isabel Cano's Statement: "I create art to share with the viewer a slice of what and how, I perceive my surroundings.

My series 'Flowers' is a study of shape, color, light and shadow.

I create these paintings to give the flowers a much longer life, in hopes that more people will get to see the ones that captivated me. The purpose of the bigger scale is to create an impact that will force as many viewers as possible, to see the beauty that would otherwise go unnoticed."

Coordinator for exhibit: Mindy Faubion, [email protected]

"Outside the Box"  exhibition at PointBank Black Box Theater
Gail Williamson Cope: Exhibition of Animal Series "In Polka Dot Land" is currently on display through January.

Artist Statement: "My work has evolved to a series of mixed media paintings exploring the reduction of mark making to the simplest forms-dots, dashes and circles. Although the use of these most basic forms would imply a simple surface, in fact the marks are layered in complex ways, and the background or under-painting takes on even more importance as it interacts with the layers. An exploration of textile references resonates with my childhood and continues to have value and meaning for me today. The work is the culmination of exploration of art techniques while seeking to convey the deeper experiences of seven decades of study, travel and life experience."

Denton, TX photographer, Thomas Judd, has been making photographs for over 35 years. What began as a hobby in the late 1960's eventually turned into a career. Growing up in the Hudson Valley region of New York State, Judd learned to develop film and make black and white prints with his dad in a home darkroom. After the family relocated a couple of times, Judd found himself in the Chicago area for his last year and a half of high school where he worked for both the school newspaper and yearbook as a staff photographer.

Thomas Judd earned a B.A. degree in Cinema and Photography from Southern Illinois University in 1980 and has made a career as a working photographer ever since. Experienced in many areas of commercial photography, as well as having taught beginning photography mini-courses at the University of North Texas, Judd has always kept a place in his life for making photographs that are purely for artistic enjoyment.  His fine art photographs are widely exhibited, have won numerous awards, and are held in private collections throughout the United States.
