TCA 3rd Annual Women's Golf Tournament Recap
On Wednesday, September 7, 2022, the TCA held its 3rd Annual Woman’s Golf event at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham. Participants were met with gorgeous weather and a day full of networking, on-course fun, and delicious food!

Over one hundred women in the construction industry graced the north course with their golf skills (all levels included) and for the first time, with COVID-19 restrictions lifted, were able to kick back at the end of the evening for a Cajun Buffet Dinner, cocktail session, and prizes.

As always, we want to give a special thank you to our amazing sponsors who with their support helped make this event an unforgettable experience for all involved; Broccolini Construction led the way by sponsoring our Liquid Station (beer and coolers) as well as a Poutine Truck which no doubt went over very well with the golfers.

Home Depot once again sponsored the Espresso & Gelato station which has now become a TCA golf staple, and United Rentals sponsored the golf carts the golfers rode in all day.

Other great Sponsors were Bothwell-Accurate, Revay & Associates, Armstrong World Industries, Flynn Group of Companies, Graham Group (Calgary), Pallette Valo LLP, True Law Legal Services, and TSS Building Science who delighted all the attendees with their famous Cannoli.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and supported this event. We hope to see you back, next year!
Special Thank you to our amazing sponsors

TCA 27th Annual Members' Day recap — Thank You for Attending
After two years of being on hold due to the COVID-19 circumstances, the Toronto Construction Association's 27th Annual Members' Day was officially back in person to continue connecting with our member companies. The event, which is generally organized and hosted in May, took place on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, this year at the Richmond Hill Office location, with a turnout of over 150 members.

After registration and breakfast were completed, members got to hear from TCA's President & CEO, John Mollenhauer who was this year's industry forum keynote speaker. The focus of John's presentation was "where do we go from here? And what matters most to TCA members is how this disruption in all its forms will shape the industry in 2023 and beyond," in which he expressed that change is occurring rapidly and the construction industry needs to be prepared. To read the full article published by the Daily Commercial News detailing the full speech, click here.

For the remainder of the day, members had an opportunity to exhibit their product(s) and service(s), and network with other industry professionals. A delicious BBQ Lunch was served at noon and enjoyed by all, plus some members got a chance to win some amazing prizes courtesy of TCA and Home Depot.

Thank you to the members who came out and celebrated with us and helped make this members' day beneficial and successful. We cannot wait to host you all again soon.

Special thank you to our sponsors

TCIC Featured Courses Of The Month
Top Four Essential Skills for Construction Project Sites

Project Sites are complex social environments. Site policies that try and capture policies of the stakeholders in all directions including owners, subcontractors, consultants and suppliers means negotiation is present well over 50% of the day, regardless of what contracts are signed and what terms and conditions are contemplated prior to a shovel going in the ground.

This course will cover the following topics:

Productivity: Learn how to assess your site productivity. For example, how are you currently evaluating your productivity? Are you relying on subcontractors to self-evaluate? Do you evaluate what is causing impact and stacking? A good change order protocol and analysis of your site productivity will provide insight into how to solve and avoid future problems. Knowing how to evaluate productivity on-the spot or via field ratings can be critical to project success.

  • Learn how to evaluate job site efficiency via field ratings and
  • how to apply them on your site
  • 7 Barriers to Construction Productivity gap (as defined by McKinsey & Company)
  • Develop a plan to implement productivity improvements and how to present it to senior management

Topping off: Patient Support Centre at SickKids
one step closer to completion

Global design and consulting firm B+H, the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and PCL Construction celebrated the topping off for the new SickKids Patient Support Centre (PSC) this week. The design for the 22-storey tower, located on the SickKids campus in Toronto’s Discovery District, is centred on creating a workplace environment that prioritizes staff and learner wellbeing, while housing critical educational, training and administrative resources for the hospital.

Once complete, the PSC will serve as an integrated workplace for SickKids staff and learners, one that blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors, health care, office, retail and urban design.

The new facility’s design features a range of light-filled workspaces and common areas, collaborative neighbourhood hubs, and a rooftop patio located on the 22nd floor where staff, learners, caregivers and others can enjoy a moment of reprieve and quiet in the outdoors.

To further strengthen the building’s connection to nature, biophilic design strategies were integrated throughout the building. The design also includes a series of ‘enhanced wellness rooms’ that include comfortable seating, storage, a mini fridge and sink. These single-occupant, staff-only areas are intended to support a diverse array of needs to support of mental and physical wellbeing.

The PSC will be the new home of the SickKids Learning Institute, which supports more than a thousand world-class trainees, students and learners annually. Additionally, the building will contain a state-of-the-art Simulation Centre for hands-on teaching in a bright, modern workspace for professionals, management and support staff.

“We’ve been on this journey for many months now and are so excited to see the first phase of Project Horizon becoming a reality,” said Peter Goldthorpe, vice-president, transformation for The Hospital for Sick Children, in a statement. “Floor by floor, pane of glass by pane of glass, we are finally seeing the future of SickKids come to life. We’re thrilled to take this next step to transform the campus and are excited to open the doors of this modern building to our staff, patients and families in 2023.”
