Greetings Rondout Families, Faculty and Friends,

As we welcome October tomorrow, we would like to take time to share information about upcoming Halloween activities. Halloween is one of the Rondout Community’s favorite secular holidays. There are many long-standing traditions that date back generations which have been enhanced by some new traditions during the past decade. Let’s take a quick look at these holiday happenings as we start October to give everyone plenty of time to plan for this festive day and to make accommodations for those students who may need alternative activities based on family preferences and cultural traditions.

The Halloween Parade…K-5 Students and teachers will enjoy a quick parade through the halls and ending in the South gym to show off their costumes and dance to the Halloween Boogie beat. The costume themes can range from A to Z and creativity and imagination are certainly on parade. Student costumes must allow for movement, be school appropriate and not restrict the vision of the child. No weapons of any kind… real or look-alike are allowed. There are no exceptions for this expectation. Parents and family members are welcome to buzz in at the South entrance and join the audience in the South Gym to view the parade. We expect the parade to begin at 1:00 p.m. as students come from the classrooms to join the costumed line and at 1:20 p.m. the K-5 students will return to their classrooms for classroom parties, clean-up and dismissal.

Classroom Parties… The festivities include classroom parties and this year they will begin at 1:20 p.m. and finish by 2:10 p.m. The parties are planned by the PTSA assigned Room Parents. The Head Room Parents should plan to arrive at 12:30 p.m. in order to have the food snacks reviewed by Nurse Kellie. Party plans should also be reviewed with the classroom teacher prior to the date of the party and often include a games or an art activity and some type of edible or non-edible treat. Parents should keep in mind that due to our food policies, all food items to be shared at the party must be pre-approved by the nurse at least one day before the event and then be double checked on the day of the party to insure that students with food allergies are safe. Only pre-packaged food items with ingredients labeled including allergen status may be provided. To insure a safe Halloween for everyone, there will be no exceptions to this policy.

The parties wrap up at 2:10 p.m. and parents who are in attendance may sign out their students early once the parties are cleaned up.  Remaining students will be picked up at 2:30 p.m. or will ride the bus home on their regular bus route.

Halloween Storytelling … Dr. Wojcik shares age appropriate Halloween stories with student K-2. The kindergarten and first grade students also love singing the Bats in the Belfry Song and acting out the 5 Little Pumpkins Poem with her. Pete the Cat often joins in the storytelling.

Upper School Activities … Upper School students do not have a Halloween party per se but will enjoy a pizza lunch followed by a trip to the local bowling alley for an afternoon of bowling fun. They will return for dismissal at 2:30 p.m.

Reverse Trick-or Treating … This year we will be preparing “treat bags” after Halloween for distribution at the USO at Great Lakes.  Please send your left over candy to school by Friday November 4th as we will be putting together the treat bags on the Family Day of Service on Saturday November 5th from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m. which will allow them to be distributed just in time for Veteran’s Day when we honor both active military and veteran service men/women.

Classroom Curriculum Based Activities… Teachers across the grades and content areas often include some holiday theme based activities that connect to the curriculum to add a little extra fun to the day. Halloween is a day filled with electric energy and excitement for students in our community. We work hard to keep that energy and enthusiasm channeled in a positive direction.

Have a wonderful weekend...Take care…Be safe...Until next time…

Dr. Jenny Wojcik

Notes from Mrs. Jacob

Students had a great visit this week to the Cook Memorial Public Library to learn about programs, materials, take a tour, and check out books. Any books that were checked out this week can be returned directly to Cook or Aspen Libraries, or returned to the Rondout Learning Center by October 20th. Many thanks to the parents that also joined us at the library.

Interested in volunteering in the library? Volunteer your time reshelving, checking in books, assisting with book processing, etc. Contact Mrs. Jacob at robin.jacob@rondoutsd72.org to attend a library volunteer orientation meeting.

Orientation meetings are currently scheduled for Wednesday, October 5th from 10:15 – 11:00am and Friday, October 7th from 1:45-2:30 pm. You only need to attend once.
