Peter Paul eNews - October 2022

Dear Michelle,

Activities are in full swing here at Peter Paul as we prepare for the winter months and holiday season. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you that have called, came by, volunteered, and supported us over the past few months as we transitioned all activities back to the Coleman Center. We are incredibly grateful for your continued support of our community through all of its changes. If you haven’t been down to the center in a while, we invite you to join us for one of our upcoming

Lunch and Learns! There you’ll learn more about our current and upcoming programming as well as ways you can partner with us.

We also recently sent out an email with upcoming volunteer opportunities; you can check that out here. Peter Paul is a Points of Light Certified Service Enterprise. Please consider volunteering with us!

Check out all of our updates below, and don't forget to connect with us on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter for the latest announcements. Thank you for your continued passion for Peter Paul and our purpose to Educate the Child, Engage the Family, and Empower the Community.

Community Law Day

Community Law Day is happening here at Peter Paul tonight at 6:30 pm! Join us and have your questions answered about evictions, estate planning, and other general legal questions. This event is hosted in partnership with attorneys from the

Hill-Tucker Bar Association and our Board of Associates.

With continuously changing laws and housing instability in our community, we hope this event will help in knowing your rights and protecting yourself against unlawful practices. Please join us tonight and share this important event with those in your network.

For questions or to support these types of initiatives, please contact the Director of Family and Community Engagement, Kim Young.

Girls On The Run

Peter Paul’s Girls on the Run Team kicked off their fall season in September and has been training hard for their 5K this December! The girls enjoy having practice at a local community park during these beautiful fall afternoons. In addition to training for their 5K, the team has engaged in lessons and discussions about positive self-talk, emotional and physical health, gratitude, cooperation, and teamwork. In the next few weeks, the girls will begin a community impact project of their choosing. Girls on The Run also surprised the girls with new running shoes this week! We are grateful for our many community partners, like Girls On The Run, who provide enrichment opportunities for our students.

Street Smartz

Check out this article on programs aiming to prevent gun violence, featuring Peter Paul student, Leilani, and community partner, Dre'Mon Miller. (Above photo courtesy of vpm.org)

Dre’Mon is the founder and owner of Steet Smartz Over Safety. Street Smartz uses the complex and exciting curriculum of criminal justice and forensic principles to empower, build confidence, and improve cardiovascular health & nutrition while also teaching career readiness skills that extend well beyond the classroom. Street Smartz serves Central Virginia and surrounding areas, introducing children and adults to the law enforcement profession by teaching them how to process crime scenes, manage peer pressure, perform CPR/First Aid, maintain their physical and mental well-being, and engage in various STEAM-related activities. His programming has been a hit with our middle school students, and we are so thankful for his continued partnership!

“I have seen firsthand the effects of our youth feeling neglected or without a voice, and unfortunately, this leads to some choosing fatal decisions for their lives. I choose to be a helping, calm, reassuring voice to remind the youth that they have a life worth living and investing in"

Bus Driver Appreciation Week

Our students and staff took a moment to celebrate our bus drivers during Driver Appreciation Week! A huge thank you to our fantastic drivers, Mr. Brown, Mr. Ross, Mr. Dillard, Mr. Underwood, and Ms. Davis who get our students safely to and from Peter Paul every day. We appreciate you!

Learning New Recipes

A few of our students, families, and seniors participated in the ever-popular Dinner and Discussion this month! The event was hosted by Peter Paul Family and Community Engagement Liaison Chimere Miles, and the recipe was led by Resident Chef Keonne Lomax.

The participants learned how to make chicken marsala using ingredients and kitchenware provided by Peter Paul. Stay tuned for our next Dinner and Discussion!
