ALWAYS THANKFUL

Hi Neighbor,

No matter how challenging things become, I'm always grateful for the many good things (and people!) in our city. As former Mayor Janet Gray Hayes once said, "We're a resilient people, capable of extraordinary creativity in meeting new challenges."

A recent visit by the Secretary of Energy, Jennifer Granholm, to our very own Martha's Kitchen showed me what great people and organizations we have in our city. Patricia Garcia, Operations Manager for Martha's Kitchen, performs miracles every day as they serve nearly 250,000 meals each month to our community in need.

Energy Secretary Granholm was in town to announce a federal energy efficiency grant given to Marth's Kitchen for energy upgrades that will help the non-profit with monthly energy bills. The savings can be put back into their meal services and reach even more community members. If you're looking for an opportunity to volunteer or donate, here's a link to Martha's Kitchen.

As we enter the holiday season, my hope is that you have plenty of time to spend with family and friends and get a chance to connect with your neighbors and community. Check out the list of holiday events below in our newsletter and enjoy the season!

Best,

Dev

November Policy Highlights

Declaring an Emergency

  • Last month my colleagues and I adopted a resolution declaring a shelter crisis and local emergency on homelessness. This action will allow the City to streamline the process for building interim housing sites and allow us to get folks off of the streets quicker.

Student Housing

  • Much needed housing for SJSU students is coming to downtown San Jose. I voted with my colleagues to approve the sale of the south tower of the Signia by Hilton, which will be used to house 800 San Jose State students. This will add a much needed economic boost to downtown.

A Cool New Guide for San Jose

San Jose California is more than just the city known as The Capitol of Silicon Valley or The Valley of Hearts Delight. San Jose is filled with culture and bustling neighborhoods all around the city limits. Local businesses and restaurants, community spaces and areas to share, districts dedicated to arts, entertainment and shopping, and many new and legacy establishments and places make up the fabric of what San Jose is….and SJ is cool!

ADOPTION FEES

Dog and cat adoption fees include spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchipping, and a one-year license. Rabbit adoption fees include vaccinations and microchipping.

ANIMAL CARE CENTER ADOPTION PROGRAM

We have many wonderful pets to adopt but know that adding a pet to your family is a big decision. All animals require training and commitment. Some pets can live well into their teens and many may have special medical needs as they get older, such as medication, frequent checkups, etc., just like people. All these things, including the joy of having a loyal friend, should be factored in before you decide to take on this responsibility.

To adopt, you must be over 18 years old and have photo ID. The photo ID can be current or expired and issued by either a domestic or international agency.

When at the shelter ask about our Foster2Adopt Program that helps animals get out of the shelter and into loving homes sooner.
