Downtown Signalization Study Kicks Off!

Have you ever walked downtown and felt like you waited too long at a traffic light with no vehicles in sight? The MPO experienced this phenomena which got us thinking; do the traffic lights fit the context of our most walkable part of town? How can people walking be prioritized downtown?

To dig into these questions, the MPO is contracting with NV5 to study the signals at:

  • San Francisco & Old Santa Fe Trail
  • Grant & Sandoval/Palace
  • San Francisco & Sandoval
  • Washington & Marcy
  • Montezuma & Sandoval

Pedestrian, cyclist, and vehicle count data will be collected and analyzed in tandem with crash data and signal timing data. The results will inform the City of Santa Fe Public Works Department's next steps to prioritize pedestrians downtown.

Long-Awaited Zia to Zia Connection

Receives Federal Grant Funding

Many local bike riders bemoan the lack of connectivity of East Zia and West Zia between St. Francis and Old Pecos Trail. An informal connection previously existed, but was closed when a land owner changed.

Currently, bikers must travel about 1 mile to to get from East Zia to West Zia, which are only 800 feet apart. However, the City was recently awarded federal Recreational Trails Program funding to design a trail connection along the Arroyo Chamiso just north of Zia (yellow dashed line).

This was the #1 priority of the 2019 Bicycle Master Plan and a priority for BPAC.

St. Francis Traffic Signals Retimed

Comic shared with permission from XKCD

In all seriousness, our traffic engineers worked very hard to re-time and coordinate the traffic signals in the St. Francis corridor and completed retiming of Cerrillos from St. Michael's to St. Francis following last winter's re-timing of Cerrillos south of St. Michael's.

In addition to improved traffic flow, upgrades to the pedestrian experience include leading pedestrian intervals and automatic pedestrian signals to cross side streets when St. Francis has the green light.

MPO staff got a tour of the Cordova/St. Francis control box (left), and can attest signal timing is no simple task!

You can expect to find the same maps and information, however new trails and bike lanes that have been completed since 2021 were added. We also still have the Family Friendly Bike Route maps in English and Spanish!

The maps will be available within the next few weeks at your local bike shop, City offices, and by request!

Plan and Program Updates

Transportation Improvement Program (TIP)

The Transportation Improvement Program tracks federally funded transportation projects. What types of projects have expended funds in the past 10 years? MPO planner, Leah Yngve, compiled the obligated funds from 2014-2023 for the Transportation Policy Board. Below are total obligated federal funds by project type.

Let's Talk About Cerrillos!

A major component of the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) update will be a focus on the unavoidable and notorious Cerrillos Road. How could it serve the community better? In the last 100 years it transformed from a dirt road (below) to a major thoroughfare and commercial corridor. What could it be in another 100 years?

Please help us shape our public engagement effort! We have a 5 question survey to inform our forthcoming public survey.

Fun stuff!
