Red Devil Task Force Summer Campus Workdays a Success
The Red Devil Task Force orchestrated four extremely successful campus workdays during the month of July. Parents, alumni, and students gathered on Saturday mornings to work inside buildings and all over the grounds to make DHHS look and feel sharper than it has in a long time! The PTO paid for all of the cleaning, gardening, and construction supplies.

They worked on projects such as rebuilding bleachers and maintaining the softball field, pulling weeds and ivy, planting flowers, trimming trees and bushes, spreading mulch donated by Francisco's Tree Service, cleaning signs and the granite marquee, and many others. Class of 2001 alumn Enoch Pascoe donated lunch and water from his American Deli franchises.

The Task Force will be organizing monthly workdays during the school year, usually on the second Saturday of the month, beginning in September. Keep an eye on this newsletter and PTO socials for updates.

Construction Will Impact Traffic @ DHHS
Emory University will soon start two construction projects directly across the street from DHHS. Please be aware of these projects and factor them into your thinking about getting to and from school.

Project #1 – Widening of Haygood Dr.
  • Mid-July – GA Power adds/removes/moves utility poles
  • August 8 - fencing goes up and project begins THIS IS THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!
  • The goal is to make a two-lane left turn lane from Haygood Dr. onto N. Decatur which will allow vehicles, including buses, to more easily queue at the light. The current intersection and light will stay the same.
  • Also will be fixing some water/sewer issues.
  • Eventually the road will be remilled, repaved, and restriped with new crosswalks added. The goal is to do this over December break.
  • Haygood Dr. will be closed periodically and Emory is very conscious of DHHS school hours.
  • DHHS parking will not be impacted.
  • The finished road will be turned over to DeKalb County after the project is completed in January 2023.

Project #2 –  Graduate Housing Construction -- Phase I
  • There are two phases to this construction project. Please see the rendering below.
  • Phase I – two 5-story buildings and a parking deck
  • Phase II – additional 6- or 7-story building to wrap around the lower parking structure built during Phase I.
  • The parking deck is slated to be completed on August 2023 and Phase I housing completed in April 2024.
  • Many trees will be removed for the construction but will be replaced across the Emory campus in accordance with the City of Atlanta's tree ordinance. The development will not contain any retail space.
  • The project will observe construction hours of 7:00 am – 7:00 pm, per City of Atlanta codes, and 9:00 am - 7:00 pm on weekends.
  • There will be an 8-foot tall construction fence to keep all students and people off of the construction site. The existing trail will be closed. Pedestrians will not be able to walk on the Emory side of Haygood Dr.
  • The sidewalk on N. Decatur Rd. will remain open during construction.
