Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland

February 2024

February is Black History Month

BLOOM (Black baby equity clinic) was making history this past week. The amazing clinic launched last July with Drs. Dayna Long, Javay Ross, and Justin Williams. I hope you all saw the beautiful write-up about the BLOOM clinic in the East Bay Times on February 3, 2024.

The Baby Hospital in Oakland 1926

Campus Modernization: almost 100 years after the construction of this portion of the hospital we are getting ready to make some big changes. Campus modernization faculty updates this week on Wednesday, noon, in person at the OPC, and Thursday at 5 pm on Zoom.

Last Friday the Dean’s Office held a UCSF School of Medicine Retreat on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medicine. We talked about: AI scribes to improve clinical care and the Information Commons to support new projects. Amazing keynote speakers included:

Aylin Caliskan, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at the University of Washington

Peter Lee, Ph.D. of Microsoft

Stuart Russell, Ph.D., Professor

Michael H. Smith, and

Lotfi A. Zadeh, Chair, in Engineering, UC Berkeley Dept of Engineering, who talked about the possibilities and limitations of the technology.

I hope you saw the announcement that next month we will welcome incoming BCH President, Nicholas Holmes, MD, MBA.

Be well,

Kelley

Thanks to Kelley Meade and the team for the new grant program that can help fund Stephen's work and dissemination!

New President of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals Appointed

Dear BCH Colleagues,

I wanted to personally reach out to share my excitement regarding the news of the appointment of Nicholas Holmes, MD, MBA, as the next president of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals and senior vice president for UCSF Health children's services.

The appointment was approved on Friday, January 26, 2024, by the University of California Board of Regents and formally announced in this message from UCSF Health President and CEO Suresh Gunasekaran.

I have had the pleasure of getting to know Nicholas during the recruitment process and am confident that he is the right person to lead this pivotal next chapter at BCH, as we work to achieve our broad vision of being a national leader in clinical excellence, research, education, and health equity. Beyond his credentials as a seasoned health care leader, Nicholas is a passionate advocate for children’s health and well-being and shares our commitment to ensuring every family has access to world-class pediatric care.

I look forward to welcoming Nicholas to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals family in March and will communicate additional details about his arrival in the coming weeks. In the meantime, I encourage you to read more about him here.

I’d like to close by expressing my heartfelt thanks to every one of you for the incredible work that has continued during this interim period. With your collective talent serving as the foundation for all that we do, I truly believe that there is no limit to what we can, and will, accomplish together.

With gratitude,

Joan Zoltanski, MD

Chief Medical Officer & Interim President, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals

Oakland PCRC and BSPL Operations and Updates!

As the Oakland PCRC and Oakland BSPL Operations continue to expand providing the most current information is a priority. The following are important updates:

  • Please include oakpcrc@ucsf.edu during the startup process all studies that will be conducted in Oakland, and to initiate the process of utilizing Oakland PCRC space. It is important we capture metrics on research at the Oakland campus so we can continue to grow our resources!
  • The Oakland PCRC space calendar has been replaced by one hosted by the oakpcrc@ucsf.edu email account. All existing PCRC appts have been moved over, and effective today, there are blocks on the original calendar where you will also find instructions for adding the new Oakland PCRC calendar.
  • To utilize Oakland BSPL services for sample processing, email crsbudgetrequest@ucsf.edu & oakpcrc@ucsf.edu to initiate your study.
  • To request lab services and lab calendar access ONLY, email Annie.Higa@ucsf.edu & oakpcrc@ucsf.edu with the following information: lab manual, study name (and IRB #), patient ID and date and time.

For further information we offer the following links:

Peds CRC Wiki and Box contain additional information regarding clinical research conduct across UCSF, with Oakland specific SOPs discussed found here: Oak PCRC and BSPL. If you need access to either of these systems, please email gillian.rush@ucsf.edu.

Release of the UCSF Changemaker Series

The UCSF Changemaker Series, created by Professor of Medicine Hilary Seligman, MD, MAS, is a four-part video series that seeks to build the capacity of UCSF researchers to generate scientific evidence that is responsive to the needs of real-world decision-makers. Each 10-15 minute video highlights a UCSF researcher in conversation with an interdisciplinary panel of non-academic experts discussing how investigators at all stages of their careers can more meaningfully inform policies, systems, and structures in order to create social or policy change.
