TALK, SING, & POINT

FORMS OF TALK AT DIFFERENT AGES

  1. PARENTESE: A way of talking is especially important during an infant’s birth months. The slow, exaggerated sounds, high pitch, and repetition of phrases help them follow along and absorb sound patterns.
  2. LABELING: Between 6-18 months, children learn lots of words (they start learning words for things long before they can say those words). During this period, labeling objects helps build their vocabulary.
  3. QUESTIONS: With toddlers between 18-36 months, parents can increase the complexity of conversations by using more diverse vocabulary and asking more questions, especially “Wh” questions (e.g., questions that begin with “Who,” “What,” and “Why.”

Talking with your child can help to form a healthy relationship. It is essential to begin when they are young. A bond can develop that you can nurture as your child grows. These discussions allow you to listen to them to understand what they want and their struggles as they get older.

KEY ELEMENTS OF SINGING

  1. Sing songs based on ROUTINES throughout the day
  2. Use songs with REPETITION AND RHYMING that teach about sound patterns
  3. Find songs that children ENJOY and can remember

KEY ELEMENTS OF POINTING

  1. What: Use pointing and other gestures to help the child understand what is being said. Point to objects and name them, especially things that interest the baby, like body parts and familiar objects.
  2. Why: Pointing helps connect words with objects. Children also start to use pointing and other gestures (shaking head, outstretched arms) to communicate.
  3. How to Respond: React the way you would to speak. Use words to reinforce what the child is expressing.
