Gold Humanism Summit speaker Dr. Danielle Ofri: "I fell in love with the stories of my patients, and so I ended up in primary care. (Haven’t looked back since!)"
“8 Questions with…” is a Gold Foundation series spotlighting members of the Gold community – doctors, nurses, healthcare professionals of all kinds, students, corporate and hospital leaders, patients, family members, Trustees, staff members, and supporters.

Read our “8 Questions with…” Dr. Danielle Ofri, co-founder and editor of Bellevue Literary Review, Bellevue Hospital physician and NYU professor. Dr. Ofri will be one of featured speakers at the 2024 Gold Humanism Summit: The Person in Front of You.

In this feature, Dr. Ofri shares what drew her to healthcare, how she brings humanism into her daily life, and both new and timeless book recommendations. Here's 1 of her 8 questions — and the answer:

What is one book you’d recommend to patients, or to future doctors or nurses?
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Behind every person you encounter is a story. There is a family and a history and unending moments of drama big and small. If you take the time to dig into it, you’ll never be disappointed.

Dr. Ryan McCarthy reflects on his white coat and its enduring meaning two decades after his ceremony
In this new essay, Dr. Ryan McCarthy evaluates his career and its symbols, thinking about the deep and varied meaning of the white coat. He is a faculty member at the West Virginia University School of Medicine and an internal medicine physician. Dr. McCarthy writes: "The white coat says, 'We have anointed you. Go forth and do good work. The white coat made me visible.'"

The latest edition of the Jeffrey Silver Humanism in Healthcare Research Roundup features 11 recently published papers on humanism in healthcare, compiled by Dr. Bharat Kumar.

These papers tackle important questions, including:

  1. Can a visual arts education and reflective practice increase empathy and perspective-taking among medical students?
  2. How do physicians view the ethical aspects of deprescribing among older patients with dementia?
  3. How racially and ethnically diverse are the leaders of medical boards in the United States?

If you would like to receive an email alert when future Research Roundups are published, please sign up.
