Dear Friends –
One of the many delights I’ve experienced over the course of the decade I’ve spent as a bookseller is the experience of watching my colleagues fall head-over-heels in love with a particular book.
It has happened time and again – one or two or more of us will encounter an advance readers copy and become utterly smitten. That book becomes a passion project in the store as we joyously spread the word about the amazing new thing that everyone everywhere absolutely has to read right now.
I watched Amelia enthuse about A Little Life back in 2015. And then Chris couldn’t stop talking about The Stranger in the Woods in 2017. Maeve shouted to the rooftops about Still Life in 2021. More recently practically everyone on staff wants to tell you (and me!) that we absolutely must drop everything and read North Woods.
I’ve found some amazing books that I never would have picked up that way – my colleagues’ genuine enthusiasm is absolutely contagious.
As for me, if you talked to me in the fall of 2021, there’s a good chance that I told you in elaborate detail about Freya Marske’s stunning debut A Marvellous Light – a deeply original, wildly delightful historical queer fantasy romance that grabbed my attention then and still hasn’t let go.
The final book in the trilogy that started with A Marvellous Light is coming out soon, and on November 11th Northshire will welcome Marske to our Saratoga Springs store for a stop on her first North American tour. There may have been some celebratory dancing and a fist pump or two in my office the day I confirmed the event - and the fact that I get to interview her.
I hope that you’ll join me on the 11th – and whenever you see me in either of our stores, I hope you’ll tell me about your latest book obsession. I promise I want to know!
