On this year's election ballot are the Education Technology Note, also known at the ETN, and SB9 Mill Levy. Both are very important to our schools, students and the services that we and our charter schools provide. Importantly, your taxes will not increase.

The ETN funds the materials and infrastructure that students and teachers need, and use, each and every day. Importantly, time and again, the innovative programming provided by technology ignites students’ imaginations.

The SB9 Mill Levy provides funds to keep our school buildings in excellent shape. They are used to repair leaky roofs, keep our playing fields athlete-ready, pay custodial contracts and fix plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling issues.

SFPS is working daily on immediate solutions to provide relief to families experiencing bus route cancellations due to the severe bus driver shortage.

Students from Milagro Middle School and Santa Fe High School can walk or find transportation to their nearest elementary school, excluding Atalaya, Chaparral and Tesuque Elementary Schools, for transportation to their assigned school. For the trip back home, students would use the same bus route to return to the elementary school they were picked up from in the morning.

For example, El Dorado Community School Route 26 will leave the school at 8:00 a.m. to transport Milagro and Santa Fe High students to school. For the trip back home, students would use the same bus route to return to El Dorado Community School.

"Whatever elementary school is closest, outside the three elementary schools with canceled routes, can transport Milagro Middle or Santa Fe High School students to school," said Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez.

"Although we currently do not have the resources to maintain all bus routes, we will continue to work daily on solutions to help mitigate the impact this is having on our families. We are confident route cancellations are a temporary condition and look forward to restoring full service," he said. "We thank the SFPS community for its patience and understanding."

To keep students abreast on using essential technology at home in case of dire weather or other disruptions, SFPS is holding a remote All Learners Day on Monday, November 6th for students in grades 9-12.

"The All Learner Day will ensure that if learning needs to take place at home, educators and students are ready," said Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez. "During the All Learner Day, students will continue to be supported and engaged by their teachers at home using the technology we've provided to them to meet classroom and individual needs," he said.

In addition, teachers will develop remote learning lessons that include synchronous (students engage in course content together at the same time) and asynchronous (students engage in course content at different times) instruction. The day's instruction will be content-specific, continuing what teachers and students are teaching and learning. Office hours or other time will be included for student feedback and attendance will be taken for each class period.

Schools will provide sack lunches for students needing lunch services to pick up during their scheduled lunch time.

The National Gallery of Art is featuring "This Land Carries Our Ancestors: Contemporary Art by Native Americans," an exhibition curated by artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. The exhibit can be explored at https://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/2023/ancestors-contemporary-art-native-americans.html.

As described by the gallery, "this exhibition brings together works by an intergenerational group of nearly 50 living Native artists practicing across the United States. Their powerful expressions reflect the diversity of Native American individual, regional, and cultural identities. At the same time, these works share a worldview informed by thousands of years of reverence, study, and concern for the land. 

"Through a variety of practices—including weaving, beadwork, sculpture, painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, performance, and video—these artists visualize Indigenous knowledge of land/landbase/landscape. Together, the works in 'The Land Carries Our Ancestors' underscore the self-determination, survivance, and right to self-representation of Indigenous peoples."

Thank you to all students and teachers who submitted artwork to SFPS' 2023 Hispanic Heritage Month Art Contest. We received 43 entries this year. It was extremely challenging to choose our winners; so many entries were deserving of recognition. 

In the end, the panelists looked for the overall quality of artwork and the student artist statements in relation to submission guidelines in order to determine our winners.  

"I applaud all students and teachers for their dedication and talents. Our world needs your creative vision. Thank you!" said Cristina González, SFPS' fine arts coordinator.

Gracias a todos los estudiantes y maestros que enviaron obras de arte al Concurso de Arte del Mes de la Herencia Hispana 2023 de SFPS. Recibimos 43 inscripciones este año. Fue un gran desafío elegir a nuestros ganadores; tantas entradas merecían reconocimiento.

Al final, los panelistas buscaron la calidad general de las obras de arte y las declaraciones de los estudiantes artistas en relación con las pautas de presentación para determinar nuestros ganadores.

“I took this photograph on an ipad using just the camera feature, I did not use any special effects. I used a newspaper for the foreground and asked my friend to stand in the window light with her flag around her. I love this photograph because the light is heavenly and the newspaper adds a layer and frames her perfectly. I am very proud of my culture, my heritage, my family, and my name. Thank you.”

“Tomé esta fotografía en un iPad usando sólo la función de la cámara, no utilicé ningún efecto especial. Utilicé un periódico para el primer plano y le pedí a mi amiga que se parara a la luz de la ventana con su bandera a su alrededor. Me encanta esta fotografía porque la luz es celestial y el periódico agrega una capa y la enmarca perfectamente. Estoy muy orgulloso de mi cultura, mi herencia, mi familia y mi nombre. Gracias."

The 2024-25 K-12 lottery opened on November 1st, providing parents with a three-month priority window to submit their interzone transfer requests. All schools are part of the lottery, including Mandela International Magnet School, Desert Sage Academy and Early College Opportunities (ECO) High School.

Parents can submit their requests through January 31st, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. by visiting https://www.sfps.info/page/enrollment.  Requests submitted after February 8th will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
