Winter Newsletter Jan-Feb-March 2023

News From

The Director

We are off and into 2023. I have been really confused about the weather. I feel the winter was most unusual this year. The February “spring break” was a nice surprise. I hope you have been able to enjoy some time outside.

As a District Director, I can say our District is the best! The Steering Committee I work with has given me a chance to work with people who understand volunteering. These people are talented and skilled. I am never disappointed. We did an excellent job of coordinating the MGC Annual Conference. Our District Meetings have been wonderful and this gives everyone in our District time to meet other Club members. Almost all D2B Clubs participated in the Conference planning and attending.

I have learned more about the benefits of NGC and MGC. Being a part of the bigger picture is how we grow and learn. Once you begin to connect with other clubs, you learn that there can be some major differences between clubs. We are not all the same. What we have in common is a love of community, nature and flowers.

With our membership, there are newsletters, websites, and social media to learn from each other. These tools give us a way to learn from each other. We have conferences, workshops,

webinars, seminars, and tours. There are schools that we can attend and learn best practices. There are many educational opportunities in Gardening, Landscape Design, Environmental, and Floral Show (Floral Design). After you have depleted the school opportunities, there are refresher courses, symposiums, flower shows, and much more.

As we work and fulfill our Club responsibilities, NGC, MGC, Central, and D2B sprinkle in a few grants and awards to help support your projects. The recognition and shout-outs that Clubs receive from our superiors is a show of accomplishment and gratitude.

Many of us (garden club members) fit into the retirement age bracket. We have time to do more of the Garden Club activities. For those members who are of the younger set, there may be time constraints with working and raising a family. However, the local Clubs offer many opportunities to learn while contributing to the community with beautification projects, working with youth, plant exchanges, plant sales, and educating the public on good gardening practices. Most of what we do is free or inexpensive and we get to meet some great people who love to garden and appreciate the beauty of growing plants.

I hope you all take time to review your Club’s mission statement and discuss the value of membership in the local club, MGC, and NGC. Take time to review the Benefits of being part of NGC, Central, MGC, and D2B.

The Garden Club of Greater Lansing

The Garden Club of Greater Lansing was organized on Feb 9, 1931. We just celebrated our 92 years. This was a branch of the Women’s National Farm and Garden Club. On Dec 14, 1933 the club joined the Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan, becoming Club #127. The long history of this club is felt in many parts of the community.

In the early years members of the club assisted in the development and care of the Japanese Gardens that were part of the Lansing Public Library. Another project was to assist with gardens surrounding the Fountain at Ruetter Park, the plantings at Potter Park Zoo, and Ingham County Hawk Island Park.

Currently the members maintain and oversee the Blue Star Memorial Garden in Francis Park, located along the Grand River. The other site is Scott Sunken Gardens. This garden was recently deconstructed and moved approximately 500 feet. The original garden over the years was more shade oriented. Some of the plants and flowers have been changed out as the current location is south facing and receives 8-12 hours of sun depending on the time of the summer. Both of these parks are located on Park property. We work in-conjunction with the Parks department.

The location of the Club has changed over the years as facilities used were otherwise removed from current location or the club outgrew the space. Currently, we reside in a central part of the Lansing community. The club meets on the second Monday of the month.

Most recently we made strides to adapt to the ever-changing environment of group activities. We try to meet in the evenings during daylight times and go back to day meetings in the winter months. We are reviewing our practices for our largest fundraiser. This year we added online pre-paid sales for our Greens Market.

Over the last few years our membership has grown and waned. We still recruit and look for people that are able to help us move forward with innovativeed programs and ideas.

Over the years we have had members who were very active at the state level in judging. These members were instrumental in assisting and educating the next group of members. The knowledge in the group has grown exponentially. Currently we have members who are involved in many areas that are connected to gardens, flowers, environment, birds, bees and other interests. Submitted by Joan Lenhard.

An Opportunity to Work with 4-H Youth

According to its website, https://4-h.org/ this familiar organization has existed for over 100 years and currently has an estimated six million young adults learning and helping in their respective communities. Its mission is “To give all young people access to opportunity.”

Types of 4‑H Programs: STEM, Agriculture, Healthy Living and Civic Engagement

4-H empowers youth with the skills for a lifetime. Our programs in science, healthy living and civic engagement are backed by a network of 100 public universities and a robust community of 4‑H volunteers and professionals. Through hands-on learning, kids build not only confidence, creativity, and curiosity, but also life skills such as leadership and resiliency to help them thrive today and tomorrow.

4‑H programs and resources are available AT

HOME or through local in-person and virtual 4‑H

clubs, 4‑H camps, in-school and after-school programs. With the support of adult mentors, youth select from a menu of hands-on project ideas to complete. 4‑H programs are available for kids and teens ages 8-18. 4‑H Cloverbud programs are available for kids ages 5-7.

Currently, the 4-H coordinator in Ingham County is asking District 2B garden clubs to share their gardening expertise. Along with the 4-H organization, garden club members can submit their projects to be added to a list of opportunities for children to participate. This is a unique opportunity where multiple clubs could join together to teach those subjects it feels most comfortable with. It could also be a possible MGC award-winning project as it showcases our clubs working in collaboration with each other to provide education for our youth.

Contact either of these following offices, if you would like to learn more about how your club can collaborate with Michigan 4-H.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!

Featured Native Plant for March By Linda O'Shaughnessy

Red Columbine

Since spring is just around the corner, I thought I would feature this spring-blooming plant...Red Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis), also known as American Columbine. Red Columbine is a great spring native flowering plant that blooms from May to June. The websites I looked at said Red Columbine likes it from sun to shade. My experience has been that it just does "okay" in full sun. The photo with the fence was taken in the Circle Garden in 2021.

The next photo was taken of Red Columbine the following year after I moved the three plants I had to part sun conditions. These plants now get morning sun and are in open shade the rest of the day. They are seen here partnered with Wild Geranium.

Red Columbine prefers medium to dry soils, but it will tolerate a wide range of soil types. I grow mine in the 50/50 blend soil

(topsoil/peat) and am now mulching with composted leaf mulch. In one place I read that this plant does much better in sandy soils because of the good drainage.

Red Columbine is one of the first plants in the spring to provide nectar for a variety of long-tongued insects and hummingbirds...although I have not seen hummingbird visitors yet to my plants. It is also a host plant for the Columbine Duskywing butterfly (Erynnis lucilius) and the Pink-Tinted Beauty (Eosphoropteryx thyatyroides). It also tends to attract leaf miners, but my experience has been that the non-natives, hybrids and cultivars are more susceptive to the leaf miner than this native.

Red Columbine will self-seed freely and the seeds are easy to collect.
