Vancouver Student Case Competition 2019
The UBC Center for Urban Economics and Real Estate at the Sauder School of Business, hosted  the UBC-Sauder International Real Estate Case Competition on November 11-12, 2019 at Vancouver, BC Canada, to fill the void of this year's cancellation of the annual Cornell International Real Estate Case Competition.

T he structure, guidelines,  and standards of this completion strictly adhered to the Cornell event.

Representing the University of Connecticut this year were as follows:  Benjamin Goldstein, Henry McKenna, Tyler Grant, Cassie Cicalis, Victoria Reynolds, Jonathan Lore and Colvert Moore. Our students had gained great experience in preparing their analysis and making an investment recommendations on a real estate case study , which was based on an actual commercial real estate transaction.

Visitors in the Classroom
On October 23, 2019,  Marty Kane and Pat Nista came to speak with the society on behalf of Barings.   With an abundance of ties to the UCONN community, it was easy for them to relay to the students their vast knowledge of the industry and give them any advice possible to make use going forward as they search for internships and full-time positions.

As a member of the Acquisitions team, Pat explained the importance of his role and how he is part of the pipeline for possible deals given to different portfolios. He went on to discuss the intense process that goes into vetting a property.  Pat handed things off to Marty who went into detail about the Management of those portfolios and what he looks for when a property is brought to him to be added to one of his groups.

After these in depth explanations from industry veterans, the students asked a multitude of questions about their career paths and any tips from the experts as they prepare to head out into the industry themselves.
RE Society Presentations
On October 29 and 30, 2019, RERC Valuation Group was on campus to meet and greet students.  Alumni Andrew Sabatini, Brian Patterson and Christopher Walker visited with the Real Estate Students.  On Wednesday, the visitors joined the student executive board for dinner followed by a presentation to the larger Society group.

Andrew emphasized how valuation is changing in the era of data mining and while the art of valuation fundamentally remains the same, there is much to do with the data being collected.

Thank you to Andrew, Brian and Christopher for taking time to meet and interview students.
RE Society Presentations
At the November 6, 2019 meeting, a team from Altus Group led by Michael Carry, and joined by Troy Sivak and Alex Moyer, had given students insights into the valuation industry.

Along with Troy and Alex, Michael explained that experience and strong understanding of valuation can be a sure advantage when searching for internships and full-time positions in the industry. They went on to stress the importance of getting trained in ARGUS.

After a fun presentation that included some trivia on the history of UCONN, the students were left buzzing about another great meeting.
