#988 to connect to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is live!
Aug 3rd, 2022

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 for people experiencing a behavioral health crisis to call, text or chat online at 988lifeline.org. Calls may be responded to in English or Spanish. Text and online chat are currently only available in English.
People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is easy to remember, like 911, and offers a direct connection to trained crisis counselors who will offer compassionate, accessible care and support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress — including thoughts of suicide or self-harm, a substance use crisis or any other kind of behavioral health crisis. The counselor is part of a call center that is linked to a network of services, so the caller will be connected quickly with the right kind of help, from the right type of helper.

Urgent need for Family Support Facilitator!
Affiliate staff and volunteers,

NAMI Oregon has recently added two more program leader trainings to our offerings for the rest of this year including a Basics teacher training to be led by NAMI’s own Dr. Teri Brister who developed the Basics program, and a Family Support Group facilitator training rescheduled from April. Here is the complete list, all to be conducted via Zoom:

August 27 & 28
Family-to-Family Teacher Training

 September 23-26
Connection Support Group Facilitator Training

 October 22
In Our Own Voice Presenter Training

October 29 & 30
Basics Teacher Training

 November 12 & 13
Family Support Group Facilitator Training

Applicants must have taken the Family-to-Family course or currently be participating in a Connection Support Group or Family Support Group to be eligible for those trainings. For the Basics training we will accept folks who have not taken the Basics course, but those applicants must be a parent or other primary caretaker of a child/adolescent who began experiencing mental health issues prior to age 13. Applicants for all trainings must be 18 years old or older by the start of the training. There is no charge to attend but applicants must have the endorsement of their local NAMI affiliate to apply.

If you know someone who may be interested in attending any of these trainings, please discuss this volunteer role with them and encourage them to submit an application ASAP as space is limited and trainings fill up quickly. The applications and schedules, as well as additional information, is available on the “Program Leader Information” page of our website.

NAMI HelpLine Launches New Nationwide Texting Support Option

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) today launched a nationwide SMS/text message support option for the NAMI HelpLine, adding a communications medium that is overwhelmingly preferred by young people — a population experiencing an unprecedented mental health crisis.

Help-seekers can now text “HELPLINE” to 62640 between 10 a.m.–10 p.m. ET, Monday–Friday, to connect with the NAMI HelpLine. The free, peer-support service provides information, resource referrals and support to people living with a mental health condition, their family members and caregivers, mental health providers and the public.

“NAMI is dedicated to reaching people who need mental health support where they are, not where we want them to be,” said NAMI CEO Daniel H. Gillison Jr. “For our youth and young adults — who are bearing the brunt of an unprecedented mental health crisis — that place is often on their smartphones.”

In addition to the new texting option announced today, the NAMI HelpLine continues to be available Monday–Friday, 10 a.m.–10 p.m. ET, by phone at 1-800-950-NAMI (6264), via the “Chat with us” web widget, or by email at helpline@nami.org.
