2024 Summer Camp Update

We cannot believe we are halfway through summer camp with over 100 campers attending this summer! Campers have been enjoying activities every day at the Center with our awesome staff and volunteers! Campers also have the opportunity to enjoy free breakfast and lunch due collaboration of SFSP, Hockomock Area YMCA and the Milford School Food & Nutrition Services department. Check out all the fun stuff we have done over the last three weeks!

This year we are also going to Mendon Town Beach weekly! The beach is an amazing place for our campers to enjoy the sun, water, the new playground, and even some ice cream from the snack shack!

Week 1, the campers were so excited to be back! We started off the warm week enjoying our MYC waterslide and getting used to the camp routine!  We also took our campers to Animal Adventures in Bolton, which tied right into our weekly theme ‘Rainforest Week’! The kids got to explore the facility and learn about all the different animals they have at their sanctuary and learned of their rescue stories!

On Friday the campers took a walk to the Milford Town Library where they were greeted by Sam and her team! They had put together a scavenger hunt, crafts, Minute to Win it Games such as keep the balloon up, build a lego tower, puzzle race, and Face the Cookie. When the campers returned, they had lunch and chose to watch our themed movie, Jungle Book, or be a part of our Baseball Wii Tournament! Congratulations to this Week 1 staff of the week, Maddie and Josh! And to our campers of the week, Jordyn and Charlie!

On Monday and Wednesday, we went to Fino pool in two shifts where kids enjoyed the new pool and splash pad! The campers also did a water animal coloring craft! At Mendon Town Beach the campers swam and hung out all day! Some had money to get an ice cream to help cool off too! Jen also surprised the kids and came by on her jet ski! At Water Wizz campers enjoyed various slides, rides, the lazy river and the wave pool! It was the perfect day for water activities!

To end the week Kim and Kathleen of UMass Extension 4-H Stem, came and led two amazing programs! They planted fruits and vegetables and talked about the importance of nutrition and made Lifecycle bracelets.

To close, the whole group of campers talked about the importance of bees and pollination! Congratulations to counselors of the week Kiaxell and Julya, and campers of the week,

Shea G. and Lily B!

Week 3 was themed ‘On the Farm’ with our annual, and highly anticipated, trip to Kimball Farms! Campers were welcomed to camp by Hannah and Jacque, from Milford Town Library, who had more amazing books to give to the children and met with the campers participating in their passport program! Campers visited Fino pool on Monday and Wednesday to cool down from the heat! This week’s craft was creating wooden animal puzzles!

They also had so much fun doing the various activities at Kimball Farms! This trip is historically our most popular, campers get the opportunity to receive lunch onsite they get ice cream of their choice, and they rotate through various activities in their groups.

Mini-Golf, Batting Cages, bumper boats and cars, and an arcade are only some of the activities campers get to participate in!

Campers ended off the week either watching the movie ‘Charlotte’s Web’ or participating in gardening with longtime volunteer Phyllis Foley!

Make sure to check out our social media for more fun photos and videos of camp!

New Monthly Gratification Post

Sam, Hannah and Jacque of the Milford Town Library!

Each month we thank an individual, business and /or organization who supports our efforts. This month we would like to extend an extra thank you to Sam, Hannah and Jacque of the Milford Town Library!

During the MYC after-school program, Sam runs a weekly book club. She has worked with our Assistant Director to carefully choose books that are age-appropriate and fitting for each month’s important acknowledgements.

Because many of the MYC after-school members also spend time at the library, she has preexisting relationships with many of the children, which encouraged children to join in the book club. Aside from Sam’s weekly commitment to the Center, she also volunteers at MYC special occasions. During our MYC Thanksgiving Meal we have yearly for the after-school members, Sam ran a craft table!

New this year to our summer camp, Sam, along with Hannah and Jacque, visit the MYC on Monday mornings to talk to the campers about the library’s passport summer project which encourages activity, reading and responsibility in which the children can earn stickers for completed tasks. For each sticker, they are allowed to vote for what they would like to be added to the library entirely for the youth’s use!

Also, this summer, we have scheduled out a few Fridays for the campers and staff to walk to the library for various organized activities.

The MYC truly appreciates this growing, ongoing community relationship. You are all truly amazing.
