Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15) is an annual celebration that honors the history, culture, and contributions of Americans whose ancestry can be traced to 20 countries and one territory — which includes Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Spain.

While the official and more common umbrella term, “Hispanic” is something that most of us are familiar with, this does not represent the diverse races, cultures, and Indigenous languages that encompass this large community. This is why you may also see this recognized as Latinx Heritage Month.

It might seem random for this holiday to be spread over two months, however, the timing of Hispanic Heritage Month deliberately overlaps with several Latin American Independence Day celebrations. September 15th was chosen as the kickoff date since it coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of five countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua), followed by Mexico on September 16th, Chile on the 18th, and Belize on the 21st. Another important date that falls within this 30-day period is Día de la Raza, or Indigenous Peoples Day, which is celebrated in Mexico on October 12th.

OAESV's Media Training

Day 1 (10/24)

Trauma-Informed Interviewing & Reporting on Sexual Violence: A Training

for Journalists

Many news stories covering sexual violence can be re-traumatizing for those interviewed, covered in the stories, or reading the stories. In order to write and publishing stories that are more informative and less traumatizing for the public, as well as distributed more widely, journalists can learn trauma-informed and survivor-centered practices.

Attendees will leave with:

  • a general understanding of trauma and how it effects interviewees and readers, including survivors of sexual violence and those who work with them.
  • trauma-informed and survivor-centered practices of journalism, such as terminology to use and interviewing strategies.
  • strategies to navigate breaking news expectations and how to collaborate and develop relationships with survivors and those who work with them
  • time spent with others in similar positions and the opportunty to share ideas and collaborate

Speakers include journalists Rachel Dissell, Rachel Lovell, and Christopher Johnston with more to be announced!

Ohio journalists are invited to attend! Register by October 21 here. We would like to save this space for journalists, so if you are not in that role please reconsider registering.

Day 2 (10/25)

OAESV's Media Engagement Training: An Opportunity for Rape Crisis Centers

Spokesperson and media training democratizes how we make meaning of the world we live in by changing the story and the storyteller. This training positions social change leaders to shift public narratives by giving them the tools to identify, craft, and share their stories, perspectives, and analysis in their communities and the media.

Attendees will:

  • establish and embody what makes them proficient in their area of focus and somebody on whom media makers can rely for truthful and valuable information on a particular subject
  • learn how to develop a political message—a persuasive body of information that persuades an audience to do, feel or say something—using an easy to remember method
  • leave with an understanding of how socialization, stigma, bias, typecasting, tropes, personal physiology, and a hypercritical and carceral online landscape impact how we feel about being a public-facing figure
  • get practiced at being a spokesperson by practicing in front of their peers and receiving real-time feedback and affirmations

This training will be led by nationally-recognized communications strategist Shanelle Matthews.

Each OAESV-recognized RCC is invited to send a maximum of 1 staff member to this training. OAESV has limited funds to reimburse mileage for your travel to this event if your organization is not able to do so.

Registration will be sent directly to RCC directors!
