Life in community markets
Senior Leadership Conference Session
At next month's Senior Leadership Conference, CEOs from smaller community newspaper markets will discuss how they are responding to the changing market dynamics and economic challenges, how these challenges differ from larger markets and what the industry overall can learn from their efforts.

Discussion leaders are: Jeremy Gulban, CEO, CherryRoad Media, Inc; James Paxton, president and CEO, Paxton Media Group; and Heidi Wright, COO, EO Media Group/The Bulletin.

The Senior Leadership Conference, set for Oct. 16-18 in New Orleans, is the most important meeting of the year for newspaper publishers, owners and leaders.

There are a very limited number of registration spots available for Solutions Partners at the Senior Leadership Conference. Don’t miss your chance to connect with the industry’s most influential executives in New Orleans. Solutions Partner registration is limited to two people per company.

Just a few sponsorship opportunities also are available that include registrations. Contact Patty Slusher for more information about sponsorships: pslusher@newspapers.org.

Is the print newspaper comics page in trouble?

Is this the beginning of the end for the daily printed comics page in many American towns and cities?

Some cartoonists and readers fear such a trend as Lee Enterprises, an Iowa-based media company that owns nearly 80 daily newspapers, is transitioning to a “uniform set of offerings” with its comics, puzzles and advice columns, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a Lee paper. The newspaper reported Sept. 11 that as a result, its print section would cut back to “a half-page of comics” Mondays through Saturdays.

And the Omaha World-Herald reported Sept. 13 that “to operate more efficiently, we’re streamlining the comics, puzzles and features that we and other Lee Enterprises newspapers have been providing.”
