Dia De Los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead, is a vibrant and meaningful Mexican holiday that celebrates the lives of loved ones who have passed away. This past weekend, PESA was excited to join Los Angeles City Councilmember Monica Rodriguez's 7th Annual Dia De Los Muertos celebration in front of Pacoima City Hall.
The street festival drew over 300 attendees and featured community altars, food trucks, art and live music. PESA had the opportunity to staff a community resource booth and share all the services available to youth and their families. With 8 social work interns and staff present, community members got to hear about PESA’s diverse services including the College Access Program, Specialized Tutoring and Mental Health Support.
Community Representative Elizabeth Sosa, who staffed the resource booth, shares, “I was so thrilled to be part of this event because the holiday holds a special place in my heart, as someone who makes an ofrenda (altar) yearly. I also wanted to be present for the opportunity to engage directly with community members whom I have similarities with and share the resources PESA has to offer year round.”
Councilmember Rodriguez prioritizes Northeast San Fernando Valley families by creating events like these and inviting community members, local artists, and different agencies to come together. She shares, “This event has grown year over year because we have such magnificent talent in Pacoima we like to feature here for everyone to celebrate. This is a production that is worthy of our community and there is something for everyone to enjoy.”
PESA is dedicated to serving families throughout the community, actively engaging with its members while being a part of important cultural events.
