Coastal Storm Damage Reduction & Beach Replenishment Project Construction Has Begun! | |
The Coastal Storm Damage Reduction and Beach Replenishment Project construction kicked off last Tuesday, January 16th. This federal project, spanning 50 years, aims to restore the city's beaches and protect our coastal bluffs through sand replenishment. The Fletcher Cove parking lot, park overlook, and beach access ramp will be temporarily closed for public safety reasons during equipment delivery. The beach and water will be closed daily during active sand placement operations from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, lasting approximately 60 days. During the initial construction phase, the public is advised to use the three other public coastal access points - Tide Park, Del Mar Shores, and Seascape Sur. The public may notice increased lighting from the dredge and support vessels throughout the night which are required to meet safety and environmental regulations. The community's support and patience are appreciated during this essential project. | |

Unfortunately, there are more and more dangerous incidents being reported involving explosions or fires caused by improper storage and disposal of household items with Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries, commonly found in cell phones, laptops, power tools, e-cigarettes, e-bikes, and electric scooters. To help prevent these types of explosions, Li-Ion batteries should be stored in well-ventilated, dry areas, away from direct sunlight, heat sources and water, and kept isolated from other batteries. Used batteries are considered hazardous waste and must be properly recycled and NEVER placed in the curbside trash, recycling, or organics carts! If batteries are not discarded properly, they can potentially explode and cause a fire in a collection cart, truck, or in a disposal facility when crushed. | |

City Hall Plastic Bag & Battery Drop-Off Program | |
Recycle household batteries and clean plastic bags at City Hall! Bins inside City Hall are dedicated to these items that are challenging to dispose of properly. Avoid putting single-use plastic bags in your recycling bin at home, as they damage sorting machines. Instead, drop off clean bags at City Hall, where they are compressed into bales for recycling into building materials. For batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, avoid home disposal to prevent contamination and fire risks. Residents are encouraged to use the designated bins inside City Hall to safely dispose of batteries and to recycle plastic bags. | |

Solana Beach Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Program | | |

Did you know it is illegal and unsafe to throw Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) in the trash, storm drain, or sewer? The good news is that the City provides a convenient HHW disposal program with two options. Solana Beach residents can safely dispose of common HHW items, such as household cleaners, used motor oil and filters, pool cleaners, automobile fluids, landscaping chemicals, batteries, mercury thermometers, non-empty aerosol cans, paint, mercury switches, or fluorescent tubes, at the regional HHW facilities in Vista and Poway free of charge. Or residents can schedule a home pick-up for a small co-pay of $10 (free for homebound or those over the age 65.) | |
