Hello Mia,

Last week our team attended the LA City Council meeting to demand the repeal of the 41.18 ordinance that criminalizes homelessness. City Council delayed the vote until yesterday, Tuesday, August 2nd. Despite activists and unhoused residents filling the council chamber and sharing passionate speeches about how this policy harms our city’s most vulnerable populations, the council voted to expand the 41.18 zones to criminalize being unhoused by 400%.

City Council defended the passing of the ordinance because "thousands of parents who support them." I am not one of those parents. They passed this legislation under the guise of keeping children safe but refuse to acknowledge the many children and youth who are unhoused. I have seen this impact within my own children's schools. Expanding the criminalization of homelessness instead of working to fix the roots of the issue (like housing inequality and the lack of mental health services) are only bandaid solutions that will hurt many more people than they help. This is why we need elected representatives in Sacramento who will fight for and invest in housing and services for our unhoused neighbors over criminalization. I may not be able to vote in City Council meetings, but I can make sure that the concerns of our District’s residents - including our unhoused neighbors - have a voice in our State laws.

June’s primary taught us that Angelenos are ready for compassionate, progressive solutions. Voters have seen the ramifications of policies like 41.18 and have taken their concerns to the ballot box. Now it’s time to make sure that these concerns are echoed at the state level. With just over three months until the general election, we must keep this momentum going and talk to as many potential voters as possible.

If you’re feeling energized and ready to take our city’s concerns to the state level please join us at our Canvass Kick-Off this upcoming Saturday, August 6th in Hermon! We just set up our new PDI account that we will debut on Saturday! Thanks to the donations of our grassroots supporters, we were able to afford the PDI platform, which has some of the best voter data and map functions. We’ll also have some of our new campaign literature to hand out to voters!

I know that not everyone has the time or ability to canvass door-to-door and that’s okay. As a busy mom myself I understand the importance of rest - especially during the summertime! What you can do instead is talk to your neighbors and friends who live in the district about why I am running to unseat the incumbent. If you can commit to talking to five people about the election, it will make a huge difference. Whether you can host a get-together over Zoom or bring your neighbors together to enjoy some driveway conversations (we'll bring the lemonade!), I would love the opportunity to tell your friends about my vision for a California that works for everyone. Get in touch with us if you’re interested in hosting an informal meet and greet! The earlier, the better - ballots will be in the mail before you know it.

Of course, we know how to have fun, too! This past Sunday we had our Pass the Primary Party in Elysian Park. I want to thank everyone who joined us and made it a memorable day. Campaigning is hard work but spending time with my community makes all of the long days and late nights so incredibly worth it.

In Solidarity,
