Education and Training Committee (ETC) News
Welcome to the Newest ETC Member

Dr Giuseppe Palmisano is currently a Professor at the Department of Parasitology, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in mitochondrial physiopathology in 2008 from University of Bari under the supervision of Prof. Sergio Papa and then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, under the supervision of Prof. Martin R. Larsen, developing methods for PTMs analysis in different biological samples. His current area of research is method development and application of proteomics to parasite infections (Chagas disease, Leishmaniasis and Placental Malaria) with a particular focus on regulatory mechanisms of PTMs-mediated cellular signals

Vision for the ETC: I am delighted to be able to contribute to the ETC by fostering the implementation of training programs for undergraduate and graduate students. These training programs will connect early career researchers from different institutions and expertise and help them grow.
Training Courses

The ETC has started to work on various workshops, courses and tutorials that we hope will contribute to the professional growth of HUPO members. We are pleased to share the "Stylish Academic Writings" training course information here. In collaboration with Westlakeomics, host of the event, live streaming is available for free or go to broadcast and watch the full-length replays in the embedded webpage. Please join us and let us know what you think.
Programs and Workshops

Inspired by the success and great potential of the “Stylish Academic Writings Course” , the ETC is looking to establish another program, “Understanding Proteomics Workshop” that will be available online. We are looking for ideas, suggestions, expectations and format ideas that the audience would like to learn and understand about proteomics. Please send your suggestions to: guotiannan@westlake.edu.cn or Justyna.Fert-Bober@cshs.org
ECR Initiative Mentoring Session Topics at the HUPO 2022 World Congress

The HUPO Early Career Researcher (ECR) Initiative is an international proteomics community, which aims to provide networking and career development opportunities for early career researchers. To this end, the ECR Initiative has planned several activities during HUPO 2022 in Cancun, Mexico (December 4-8), such as mentoring sessions, a networking evening, and a variety of competitions (with cash prizes!) and more.

The ECR Initiative is thrilled to announce this year’s Mentoring Session topics taking place at HUPO 2022. As done last year, we enlisted your help to pick one of the topics - thank you to everyone who participated in the Twitter poll – your opinion matters!

This year’s Mentoring Session topics are:
  • Imposter Syndrome: What is it and how do you fight it?
  • Exploring non-academic career pathways
  • The art of job hunting (Twitter poll favorite)

Stay tuned for information about our mentors for these sessions!
Congratulations to the Three Finalists of the HUPO ECR Manuscript Competition

The ECR Initiative would like to sincerely thank everyone who submitted their manuscript to the ECR Manuscript Competition sponsored by Taylor & Francis. The judges were faced with an impressive body of work to evaluate! The ECR Initiative congratulates this year’s three finalists:
  • Dr. Ling Hao (George Washington University, USA)
  • Dr. Raphael Melani (Northwestern University, USA)
  • Dr. Wout Bittremieux (University of California San Diego, USA)

They will have the opportunity to present their research in a dedicated session at HUPO 2022 in Cancun. A cash prize of USD$1000 will be awarded to the winner and prizes of USD$500 will be awarded to the runner-ups.
ECR Initiative Successfully Relaunches Online Panel Discussions

The ECR Initiative has relaunched its online panel discussion series to foster professional development and a space for mentorship. On June 29th, the ECR Initiative, in collaboration with the Young Proteomics Investigators Club (YPIC) of the European Proteomics Association (EuPA), hosted a panel discussion covering the topic of scientific collaborations: "Choosing and Managing Collaborations: The Do's and Don'ts".

Our wonderful panelists, Dr. Vera Ignjatovic (Murdoch Children's Research Institute, Australia), Dr. John R. Yates III (Scripps Research, USA), and Dr. Jennifer Geddes-McAlister (University of Guelph, Canada), shared insightful lessons for efficient and fruitful collaborations. This prompted a lively discussion with the audience afterwards! We would like to thank all speakers, moderators, and attendees that made this session interesting and engaging.

Stay tuned for information about the upcoming online session in September!
Submission Deadline Extended for the 10th HPP Special Issue of the Journal of Proteome Research

The Journal of Proteome Research (JPR) is preparing to publish its 10th annual special issue dedicated to highlighting the progress made on the HUPO Human Proteome Project (HPP). The JPR editorial team invites you to submit a manuscript for consideration by August 15, 2022.

For this special issue, the editorial team will consider research papers encompassing both the Chromosome-Centric Human Proteome Project (C-HPP) and the Biology and Disease Human Proteome Project (B/D-HPP), as well from the HPP Resource Pillars (Antibody, MS, Pathology, and Knowledgebase), and short definitive reports, submitted in the Letters format, on the discovery of a missing protein(s).

More details are available at the JPR website.
The C-HPP Announces the Election of Dr. Bonghee Lee as New Co-Chair of the C-HPP
Dr. Lee is well known to many of us in HUPO, he is the leader of the Chromosome 11 team from Korea and is heavily involved in K-HUPO and organizing successful meetings and workshops in Korea. Dr. Lee replaces Dr. Je-Yoel Cho, also of Korea, as a past Co-Chair. He joins Dr. Lydie Lane as one of the two C-HPP Co-Chairs and Dr. Chris Overall as Chair of the C-HPP.
C-HPP Workshop Algarve, Portugal Report
The C-HPP recently held a very successful 25th C-HPP Workshop on “Accelerating the HPP Grand Challenge” in Algarve, Portugal on Friday, May 13, 2022 following the 2nd Joint Meeting of Spanish, French, and Portuguese Proteomics Societies.

With over 70 attendees virtually and in person, considerable discussion ensued regarding the HPP Grand Challenge, introduced by the HPP Chair Charles Pineau. In addition, new Chromosome team members presented work from their labs and teams to introduce themselves and their expertise to the C-HPP. Dr. Gong Zhang, Chair Chromosome 8 C-HPP team presented "The discovery, function and evolution of the hidden human proteome translated from "non-coding RNAs”, which again stimulated considerable debate and an urge to include validated proteins encoded by so called non-coding mRNAs. Marina Gay, Spain discussed what top down proteomics can do to help the C-HPP achieve the discovery of proteoforms and missing proteins, and Dr Ulrich auf dem keller, the new lead for the new Danish Chromosome 21 team presented exciting advances in FAIMS and DIA for detecting missing proteins. Dr Lydie Lane presented a summary of the latest release of neXtProt and the advances made in enumerating the human proteome.
C-HPP Executive Committee: Chris Overall, Lydie Lane, Gong Zhang, Peter Horvatovich, Gilberto Domont and Fernando Corrales.
