HQ Happenings
Dear UCEA,

Happy Fall, everyone!! 🍁🍂 After a summer hiatus, the UCEA Spotlight is back.

I hope the start of the semester has been a gentle one. Here at MSU the leaves are starting to turn, students are realizing that the semester is flying by, and faculty are wondering when they will get their Convention papers done (that last is a joke … but all too real). As in all things, I hope you are able to take some time to enjoy the start of another academic year full of possibility and memories to be made!

I am also happy to introduce Dr. Jerome Graham as HQ’s new Associate Director! He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience on the role of race and class in educational policy, school climate, and student well-being. Along with Dr. John Yun, also HQ Associate Director, he will do great things for our community. Please join me in welcoming him to UCEA HQ!

Read below to get information on #UCEA22 and the Graduate Student Seminar, Clark Scholar nominations and volunteer opportunities [Note: November 4th deadline for both], educational policy changes that affect leaders in K12 and higher education, and recent Wallace reports on the learnings from the University Principal Preparation Initiative (UPPI), a synthesis of 20 years of research on the principalship, and state policy ESSA collaborations. Book Bans

A new report documents 2,532 instances of book bans, affecting 1,648 unique book titles, in the 2021-22 school year. However, several community coalitions across the country have successfully fought back against ban attempts.
Student Loan Forgiveness

The White House released information about how many student loan borrowers will receive loan cancellation in each state. If all eligible borrowers apply, loan forgiveness will benefit over 40 million people.
Title IX Proposed Changes

During a 2-month public comment window, the US Department of Education received hundreds of thousands of comments in response to its proposed changes to Title IX. Not surprisingly, the proposed changes are highly controversial.
ED LEADERSHIP FOREFRONT
Several new research reports supported by The Wallace Foundation present important implications for educational leadership. One report published by The RAND Corporation dives into six case studies of collaborations between schools and program partners to support student social and emotional skills. A second report from RAND studies the University Principal Preparation Initiative (UPPI) as a promising partnership initiative between leadership preparation programs and school districts to improve principal preparation and practice.

From Policy Studies Associates, new research details the impacts of the ESSA Learning Leadership Community, a collaborative effort among district leaders, state education officials, and community leaders to foster the development of equity-minded principals.

And ICYMI, check out Learning Policy Institute's recent literature synthesis on the importance of access to high-quality learning opportunities for principals.
