Portsmouth Relaunches Science Alliance,
Attracting Over 1,000 Students
EM Portsmouth Site Lead Jeremy Davis talks with students during EM’s Science Alliance at the Portsmouth Site.
PIKE COUNTY, Ohio – EM’s Portsmouth Site recently brought back the Science Alliance, an event offering students a hands-on approach to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), following a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

More than 1,000 students from 21 different high schools across four counties took part in this year’s Science Alliance. At the event, students also had an opportunity to meet with local universities and employers to learn about post-graduation opportunities.

“We are very happy to have the 11th Science Alliance back at the Portsmouth Site,” EM Portsmouth Site Lead Jeremy Davis said. “Not only is this a unique way for us to reach future generations through interactive and information-sharing sessions, it gives us the chance to share what we do at the site and promote future careers geared towards our cleanup mission.”
EM Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office Federal Project Director Jud Lilly discusses the nuclear fuel cycle with students at one of 14 science stations at the newly relaunched Science Alliance.
Portsmouth Site Engineer Ellen Stone, the Science Alliance director, leads students from Jackson City Schools in Breathitt County to one of the 14 science stations at the event.
At the Science Alliance, students progressed through 14 different science stations in small groups, exploring robotics, radiation, environmental protection, aviation and other topics.

They engaged with 13 colleges and universities, eight businesses, and the GRIT Project, an organization that helps people obtain life skills that will contribute to employment through hands-on learning and engaging challenges.

Adena Now Offering Flu Shot Clinics

Avoiding the flu this season takes one simple step, getting an influenza vaccine. Adena Health System offers many flu shot clinics, making it easy for you and your family to be vaccinated.

Adena is offering flu shots by appointment at any of its family medicine, primary care and pediatric locations. Flu vaccinations are also available at all Adena urgent care locations in Chillicothe, Circleville, Hillsboro, Jackson and Waverly.

Adena is offering curbside flu shots at a number of its clinics on selected dates. For curbside services, credit/debit cards will be accepted for self-pay and insurance cards taken for others. No scheduling is required.

Adena experts recommend getting flu shots as soon as possible in order to prevent contracting the flu, which could leave people more susceptible to Coronavirus infection and serious illness. A flu shot not only protects the individual, it protects others by limiting the chances of spreading the flu virus.

For children older than six months and adults, the flu shot can prevent them from getting sick, prevent flu-related hospitalizations, and potentially lessen symptoms or length of illness should they get a strain of the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone six months of age and older, including the elderly and pregnant women, receive an annual flu shot. Flu shots taken by pregnant women can protect their babies from the flu after birth.

Most insurance companies cover the cost of a flu shot, but patients may want to check with their insurance provider if they are unsure.

Together, we can protect ourselves and each other against the flu by getting a flu shot today.

To schedule a flu shot, call your primary care provider or stop by one of Adena’s six urgent care locations. Need a family doctor? Let Adena help you find one by calling 740-779-FIND.
Hocus Pocus Community Focus Trunk-or-Treat Event

As you may have heard, we are hosting our Hocus Pocus Community Focus Trunk-or-Treat Event next Thursday, October 27 from 5pm - 7pm at the Pike County Fairgrounds. With the focus of this event being on providing the resources, organizations, and support available to residents of the area we would love to have you participate in this fun Halloween event. You are welcome to setup at one of the available tables in the building or decorate your vehicle's trunk and setup outside. Last year, this event brought in over 300 children with their families despite the rainy weather and based on our growing attendance at our community events, we are expecting to see upwards of 350 - 400 people this year.

We are asking our participating partners to hand out candy, snacks, or novelties (your choice) during the event to the kids and sharing information about your organization and supportive services to the adults in attendance. You are highly encouraged to decorate your table/trunk in a Halloween motif (the theme of course is based on the Disney Halloween classic) and we will have the Sanderson Sisters and Billy Butcherson running amuck during this event to interact with the kids and help make this event fun.

If you would like to participate in this event, please let me know by Friday so that I can ensure that we have a space reserved for you. Setup will begin on Thursday, October 27 at 3pm to ensure that everyone is ready to go at 5pm.
Ohio Valley Bank will once again issue a Community First Holiday Gift Guide to highlight gift ideas from local businesses.

We would love for you to participate. OVB does this as a service project for the businesses of its community, so it is completely free to you. #CommunityFirst

To be included, just select a product sold in your business that you would like to promote as a holiday gift idea. Send us a photo of the product and a short description of no more than 25 words. You can submit more than one product but multiples will be subject to space available. Photos including more than one type of product are discouraged. Family friendly products only. OVB reserves the right to refuse any submission.

Hurry! The deadline for submissions is October 31, 2022. Submissions can be submitted online at www.ovbc.com/community-first-holiday-gift-guide or dropped off at any Ohio Valley Bank location with instructions to forward to Corporate Communications. Make sure any images are of high resolution for printing.

The Bank plans to have the Holiday Gift Guide available to the public the week of Black Friday. Guides will be available in both print and electronic formats.
