YOU’LL INEVITABLY FIND WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR

It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is this month. It’s hard to believe because it seems like time flies by so fast these days. It’s also hard to believe because, as I look around at the world we live in, there are a lot of things I’m not thankful for. The war between Israel and Hamas. The war in Ukraine that rages on. Children around the world are displaced from their homes, and children in our own community are without adequate food or shelter. There’s the global climate crisis, the growing mental health crisis, and people fighting everywhere. And all of these things alongside the day-to-day things we all deal with: the ever-growing to-do-list, bills to pay, jobs that aren’t always very fulfilling, struggles in our personal and family lives. If you look for things to be down and discouraged about, you’ll inevitably find them.

And yet, the opposite is also true. Just take a minute to look at your own life… can you find things you are thankful for there? Do you have people in your life who love you, and people who have been there through thick and thin? Do you have a roof over your head, clothes on your back, food on the table? Do you have a few little things in your life that give you joy?

And then, look at the world around you… are there things in it that you’re thankful for? Despite all the terrible tragedies of the world, do you look around and see signs of God’s hope and love around you? Do you see individuals and service organizations working hard to make the world just a little bit better? Do you see children playing with each other, despite their differences, even when the adults can’t get along? If you take a step outside, do you notice the beauty of God’s creation? If you look for things to be thankful for, you’ll inevitably find them. And noticing all those little things for which we’re thankful can change our whole outlook on life.

Jesus once reminded his followers not to worry about all those things that have us tied up in knots. Instead, he turned their attention to the things we can be thankful for all around us, if we have but eyes to see: “Look at the birds in the sky! They don't plant or harvest. They don't even store grain in barns. Yet your Father in heaven takes care of them. Aren't you worth much more than birds?”

If we were to count our blessings we would realize how blessed we really are. Because if we were to look, we would inevitably find more things to be thankful for than we can count.

So, here’s your challenge for the month of November: take five minutes out of your day, every day, to give thanks. You can do so in silent meditation and prayer with God. You can do so by writing an email or a text to a new person each day to express your gratitude to them. You could even start a gratitude journal to write down three new things you’re thankful for to get your day started right. Just take five minutes and see what it might do for our outlook on life.

As you do so, know that one of the things I am most grateful for is you, and this beautiful congregation we belong to. Thank you for the ways you do such good work in making this world a better place. Thank you for the love you share with me and with so many others. Thank you for being you, the beloved child of God you were made to be. And most importantly, thanks be to God for you.

THE COLUMBARIUM IS COMPLETE!

After many years of research and planning, the Vinje Columbarium has finally come to fruition. Please take a moment next time you are in the building to take a look at it. You’ll find it outside of the south entrance. We hope you’ll plan to join us for a dedication ceremony that will take place during worship on All Saints’ Day, Sunday, November 5. The Vinje Lutheran Church Columbarium has been created to provide a space of inurnment of cremated human remains. Like all churches, Vinje Lutheran Church reaches its members in all areas of life, as well as in death. In early America, a church having its own burial ground on its property was a common practice and continues to be a tradition in many locations across the country. In this tradition, Vinje Lutheran Church has established a defined area that includes a columbarium to allow our members to retain a close connection with the Church in death, as well as in life. This space provides a place of perpetual care, solitude, and consolation for the families of the deceased.

Niches are now available for purchase and inurnments. Please find more details on our website or reach out to Columbarium Committee members, Tim Ostby, Cheryl Schmidt or Jan Dahl.

FALL ENERGY SAVING TIPS

Take Advantage of Heat from the Sun

Open curtains on the south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat the home, and close them at night to reduce the chill from cold windows.

Cover Drafty Windows

Install tight-fitting, insulating drapes or shades on windows that feel drafty after weatherizing.

Adjust the Temperature

When you are home and awake, set the thermostat as low as is comfortable. When you are asleep or out of the house, turn the thermostat back to save as much as 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills.

THANK YOU for your great response to our plastic bag (film) recycling program!

EXPLORING VINJE'S HISTORY

This month marks the 60th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination and pastor Andrés chatted with Myron Dunlavy, whose wedding was celebrated at Vinje on the day of the president’s assassination. Special thanks to Bob Larson, from the Kandiyohi County Historical Society, who helped with finding some of the data for this story.

Marilyn Kohl’s and Myron Dunlavy’s wedding was one of the first weddings in the new Vinje church. They decided to have it on Friday November 22nd of 1963, shortly after they both had turned 20, because neither of them needed the consent of their parents. They had a small window in which to get married, because a law that raised the age for a person to get marriage without parental consent from 18 to 21 would take effect on January 1st, 1964.

They planned to have a candlelight service followed by a reception in the new church’s fellowship hall for approximately 300 guests.

On the day of the wedding, the bride and some of her friends were decorating the sanctuary with baskets of blue carnations and mums, spiral candelabra and aisle taper candles with large white bows when someone from the church interrupted them to share the news that President Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas. It was very quickly decided that all churches in Willmar would hold memorial services that night at 5:15pm. They were asked if they would be willing to postpone the wedding to another day. This would have been very complicated, and they knew that the guests from South Dakota were by then already on their way to Willmar. So, they refused to postpone the wedding to another day. However, they did agree to take down the decorations they had already set up, and wait until after the memorial service to redecorate the church for their ceremony.

The wedding took place at 8 pm, probably later than originally planned. It was officiated by pastor Paul A. Hanson, and all went well. Curiously, the long article with all the details of the wedding that appeared in the West Central Daily Tribune on February 12th, 1964, does not mention that the whole festivities were close to being postponed to another day.

Myron remembers that they went on a short wedding trip to northern Minnesota and that most of the places they had planned visit were closed in mourning for the death of the president. As Myron laughingly said, churches were almost the only places open, and they attended several memorial services. Despite this unexpected start, Marilyn and Myron were happily married for almost 60 years until Marilyn’s death in 2021.
