The Yampa Valley Community Foundation is proud to announce we've been recognized with the 2024 HUD Secretary's Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships for our collaboration with Craig Housing Authority on the 8th Street Development project. Tim Wohlgenant, YVCF CEO, and Peter Brixius, City of Craig City Manager/Craig Housing Authority accepted the award at a ceremony in Washington DC on July 11th. The award is a national partnership between the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Council on Foundations that calls attention to philanthropy’s work with government partners. YVCF was one of six awardees nationwide in 2024.

  • $243,000 for graduating seniors

"She Walks on Water"

A new Sandy Graves sculpture in tribute to local artist Susan Schiesser was installed at the Bud Werner Memorial Library at the end of May. Honoring Susan's important contributions to Steamboat's art scene, the sculpture was made possible by donations to the Susan Schiesser Memorial Fund of YVCF. Inspired by Susan's painting "She Walks on Water," the aluminum bear with wings sculpture is interactive, with sensors that activate lights when a person approaches at night.

WZ Giving Circle grants

The WZ Giving Circle met in July and funded 11 proposals totaling $38,051 to assist community members in need. Proposals included an e-bike for a young man with mobility challenges to independently be able to travel around town, dental work for a 75-year old woman on fixed social security income, and mortgage assistance for a long-time local family navigating multiple severe medical and mental health challenges.

This brings the total granted through the WZ Giving Circle in 2024 to $78,134.62. The WZ Giving Circle is a group of community members who pool their donations to provide funding for neighbors in crisis, for needs for which there is no other funding available. For more information or to inquire about joining the WZ Giving Circle, please contact Traci Hiatt at traci@yvcf.org

Opera Steamboat Endowment Fund

Opera Steamboat's mission is "to enrich the well-being of our community through innovative, educational, and collaborative musical arts programs." Founded as Emerald City Opera in 2002, the organization rebranded in 2022 and is in the process of shifting its organizational structure away from a summer festival season to year-round programming and increasing pay for staff and artists.

Opera Steamboat recently opened an agency endowment fund at YVCF - the 23rd such fund held at the Foundation. Nonprofit agency endowments help ensure financial stability for the life of the organization; they benefit from investment and create an annual income stream for ongoing needs and a safety net through unstable times. Supporters can strengthen the endowment through tax-deductible donations or legacy giving. Learn more from Opera Steamboat General Director and CEO Julie Maykowski.
