Beginning today, LA County vaccination sites will start administering the Novavax vaccine. Unlike the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, the Novavax vaccine was developed without the use of mRNA technology. The vaccine was found to be 90% effective against mild, moderate, and severe disease in the company’s Phase 3 clinical trial involving 30,000 participants ages 18 and older.

La County residents 18 years and older can get the Novavax vaccine, which is a two-dose primary series, with the second dose administered three weeks after the first dose. Boosters are currently not recommended and the Novavax vaccine is not yet authorized for children 17 and younger.

Residents can walk into any LA County Department of Public Health vaccination location to receive the vaccine. Residents can also contact their provider to see if their medical provider is offering Novavax.

The Community Services Department is excited to offer in-person after-school programming at Coolidge, McKinley, Washington, and Wilson Elementary Schools for 1st to 5th grade students.

The program is FREE and includes homework assistance, recreation activities and arts & crafts. To register, click here.

What is Monkeypox?
Monkeypox, a disease caused by infection with monkeypox virus, is a rare disease. According to LA County Department of Public Health, the risk to the US population remains low based on information available.

The monkeypox virus can spread by:

  • Touching contaminated objects, fabrics (clothing, bedding, towels), and surfaces that have been in contact with someone with monkeypox

To prevent the spread of the monkeypox virus, persons should avoid:
  • Physical contact or talking closely with someone with monkeypox
  • Touching shared fabrics, shared surfaces, and personal objects used by someone with monkeypox

What are the symptoms?
  • Rash resembling pimples or pus-filled blisters
  • Fever and headaches
  • Muscle aches
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Symptom onset ranges from 5-21 days.

Steps to help prevent monkeypox include:
  • Avoid contact with materials, like bedding, that has been in contact with a sick animal or person infected with this virus
  • Keep infected patients away from others
  • Wash hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer after contact with infected animals or humans
  • Avoid contact with animals that could have the virus (such as animals that are sick or that have been found dead)
  • Wearing a well-fitting mask or respirator by the person with monkeypox and the contact (for children over 2 years of age) when interaction is unavoidable

Residents who suspect they may have monkeypox and wish to get tested can contact their healthcare provider, call 211 or visit a LA Public Health Sexual Health Clinic. For more information, visit LA County Department of Public Health.
