As we step into February, a month dedicated to Cancer Prevention, let NB Lung be your partner in health. This month serves as a crucial reminder that prevention is the key to a healthier future.

Did you know that radon, a silent and invisible threat, is responsible for 16% of lung cancer cases in Canada? Nationally, 1 in 5 homes have unsafe levels of radon; in New Brunswick that number is 1 in 4. This Cancer Prevention Month, NB Lung is here to empower you with the tools to protect yourself and your loved ones.

We are proud to offer radon test kits, a simple yet powerful measure to detect the presence of this hazardous gas in your home. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can seep into buildings and accumulate to dangerous levels. By testing your home, you take a proactive step in reducing your risk of lung cancer.

Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable lung cancer, and quitting is the single most effective way to reduce your risk. Our dedicated team is here to guide and support you on your journey to a smoke-free life, ensuring a healthier and happier tomorrow. The NB Lung team has a busy February ahead of us! Keep an eye out for an event near you, come out and meet the crew!

NB Lung team members will be attending NBCC Career Fairs in Saint John on February 7th and in Fredericton on February 13th. NBCC’s Career Fairs are a great way to engage with youth and young adults in New Brunswick, letting them know about the important work we do, and hopefully meeting some passionate candidates for summer students. We pride ourselves on offering employment to young professionals at every chance that we can get.

On February 8^th we will be in Saint Andrews for a Community Radon Testing Drive! Last November, the team travelled to the village of Havelock to meet with Angela Stief Lea, a New Brunswicker living with radon-induced lung cancer. Angela began promoting radon awareness in her community after she was diagnosed with lung cancer and had her home tested for radon, where she found that the levels were well above safe standards. We partnered with RPC Labs in Fredericton, and Health Canada to test the entire village of Havelock for radon. Now, thanks to our Angela’s Allies Community Fund, we are holding another testing drive in Saint Andrews! Stay tuned to our socials for more information.

On February 12, the team will be in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, as we host our first Atlantic Air Quality Workshop. This is a free event open to everyone, with online and in-person options available. You can register for the event, and find a full list of speakers and topics, on our website.

🫁Upcoming Atlantic Air Quality Workshop - Save the Date🤝

NB Lung is proud to announce that we will be hosting the 2024 Atlantic Air Quality and Health Workshop on Monday, February 12 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Funded by Health Canada, this free one-day event is open to members of the public with stakeholders from diverse academic, healthcare, nonprofit, and government (federal, provincial, and municipal) sectors across all four Atlantic provinces. Attendees are welcome either in person at the Courtyard by Marriott Halifax Dartmouth, or online through Zoom.

The workshop will include a number of presentations by subject matter experts on topics related to indoor and outdoor air quality, human health, and the health impacts of climate change in the Atlantic region. There will also be time for breakout rooms and Q&A sessions so that attendees can take a deeper dive into the presentation topics.

Some of the subjects being covered are: Wildfires and air quality in Canada and the Atlantic region; Indoor air pollution as a risk factor for chronic disease; Air quality on school buses; Radon testing and mitigation, and much more!

📣We need your Voice! EV Impressions Survey🚗

NB Lung wants to encourage Atlantic Canadians to consider purchasing electric vehicles (EV) rather than gasoline and diesel-based cars. Our goal is to improve air quality by significantly decreasing the number of gas-powered vehicles on the road in Atlantic Canada.

New Brunswick saw a 67% increase in EV purchases in the 2023, thanks in part to provincial and federal rebates, shifting attitudes towards EVs, availability, and the award-winning efforts of our Drive Electric Atlantic program.

To help encourage Atlantic Canadians to "Drive Electric", we need your help to understand the current awareness, motivations and vehicle needs of Atlantic Canadians.
