This week we talk to Tyler Meredith, a policy expert who helped to craft the 2019 and 2021 election platforms for the Liberal party. We talk about his journey into policy work, some of the work he is most proud of in his time in government, what needs to be done to move us forward out of this housing crisis, and a unique policy solution both he and Alan Broadbent put together that would be both cost-effective and impactful in creating new deeply affordable housing.

Struggle to Stability: Creating A Tailored Management Course for Those Living with Low Income
Now more than ever Canadians are recognizing the importance of financial well-being – achieving peace of mind about our financial situation, feeling secure in our ability to absorb a money setback, and having the freedom to make choices that allow us to enjoy life. Financial stress is compounded when people feel a loss of control and lack the appropriate knowledge and information to make decisions in their best interests. Prosper Canada talks about the work they are doing in this area.

The Latest from OMSSA’s Blog: How Can Social Services Help End Hunger?
Food banks and municipal social services share the same goal: supporting vulnerable Ontarians to live a life of dignity. Each September, Feed Ontario and their network of food banks take part in Hunger Action Month, encouraging everyone in the province to do their part to end food insecurity in Ontario. With the dramatic rise in food bank use over the last few years, the need for action on hunger and poverty is more urgent than ever. Those who work on the front lines of the social services sector have a vital role to play in this fight.

Dufferin County and lower-tier partners prepared to support people in need with first-ever local emergency support services trailers Dufferin County and its local municipal partners continue to lead the way in emergency preparedness and are ready to meet the needs of residents and visitors in any crisis. Together, Dufferin County, Amaranth, East Garafraxa, Grand Valley, Melancthon, Mono, Mulmur, Orangeville and Shelburne have purchased and stocked eight municipal emergency support services (ESS) trailers to provide support in local crisis situations. These trailers are the first of their kind in Ontario at a regional level and will help ensure the safety and well-being of the community in emergency situations. The ESS trailers will be stationed in each lower-tier municipality for rapid deployment to designated shelters.
The trailers contain equipment and provisions to enable volunteers to provide support to up to 50 people per trailer in emergencies, including:
• 50 folding cots
• 50 blankets and pillows
• Reflective vests for volunteers
• Personal hygiene supplies
• Emergency food supplies
• First aid kids with enhanced wound care supplies
• Administrative supplies
Between the eight ESS trailers and an additional County support unit that can provide ESS to up to 150 people, this partnership will allow the County and local municipalities to provide support to up to 750 people in an emergency. Interested in volunteering to help your community if an emergency strikes? The County is recruiting and training volunteers who live nearby local designated shelter sites to help set up and operate municipal emergency shelters. Interested residents can contact emergency.management@dufferincounty.ca to learn more.
