Sunapee Happenings

Where has the summer gone? Whether it’s the first acorn or solitary golden leaf that’s drifted down on the pavement like a sentinel, or a nip in the breeze that wasn’t there yesterday... or yellow sunflowers standing tall in the garden and yellow school buses on the road… all signs are alerting us to slow down not only for safety but also to enjoy the change of seasons.

Cue The Music

After glorious summer of music ringing out all over the Sunapee region, most local performance halls are dark this week, with the exception of Newport Opera House, where the spotlight will be on Livingston Taylor this Friday night.

Coming next week: Friday September 23rd: Cozy Sheridan will be featured at Sunapee Coffeehouse.

Then on Thursday, September 29: Pousette-Dart Band will be at Flying Goose.

Enjoy this rare glimpse into avid baseball fan, Itzhak Perlman… who also happens to be considered to be the world’s greatest violinist.

Who is Sunapee's oldest resident?

Who will be the next recipient of the Boston Post Cane?

What is the Boston Post Cane? In 1909 the now defunct Boston Post newspaper designed and distributed walking canes to 700 New England towns. The canes, made of ebony—imported from Africa and crowned with 14-karat gold—were then presented in varying measures of ceremonial pomp, to the oldest living male of those municipalities. Since then, for over a century, the canes have been handed down to the next oldest survivor in those towns, in what has become a venerable Yankee tradition. Women were added to the list of cane recipients starting in 1930. “The idea was to be given by the city to its oldest resident, as a sign of respect. While newspaper circulations across the country are on the decline, many New England cities and towns still maintain one of Boston’s oldest newspaper traditions.

A search is on for the oldest living resident in Sunapee. If you have any suggestions, please email frontdesk@town.sunapee.nh.us

Bird Migrations Have Begun ~

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology tell us that, "Birds are already starting their migrations. Don't miss out! After nesting season is over, migratory birds can wander widely as they fuel up for their journeys, and many are on the move even before August rolls around. BirdCast's localized migration monitoring tool, Migration Dashboard, is now up and running for the season: See how many birds flew over your county last night, or track them in near-real time as they depart after sunset each evening."

Need a migration-science refresh? Check out The Cornell Lab's primer on the how, where, and why of bird migration, or read about some of the species that are the among the earliest movers.
