Stedman Families,
It's been a terrific start to 2024 as we make resets throughout the building and set high expectations of ourselves and our students. I continue to be grateful to be a part of this community.
There is no school on Monday as we honor the legacy and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His hope for justice lives on here in our community, and I hope you are able to spend some time reflecting upon his life's work, values, and mission over this long weekend.
Students from our Kindergarten and 1st Grade classrooms will be taking part in the annual Marade with students from across Park Hill on Tuesday. If you'd like to join, they will be meeting at Turtle Park around 9:45am and walking to Montview Presbyterian Church where they join in song together. (Should the temperatures be too low, they will take the bus directly to the church) Dr. King once visited this church, so it is a special and powerful moment in the neighborhood.
It is forecasted to be an incredibly cold weekend. We hope you are able to stay warm despite the elements, and please don't hesitate to reach out to Ms. Ali if you are in need of winter coats or gear. In addition, find resources here for:

HONORING THE LEGACY OF DR. KING
Every January we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He is remembered as a civil rights activist who committed his life to racial justice. While it is easy to simplify or downplay his message for mass consumption, we know that he called for drastic changes to bring equality to America. We hope to be living out his dream here at Stedman and giving our students the tools and critical thinking skills to be a part of that change: there is still much work to be done. Below are some resources that might be helpful for your family as you dig deeper into his work and message.

Hello Stedman community! My name is Robbin Trotter and I am serving as your Interim Principal starting January 2024. I am a mother of two, grandmother of two, woman of faith and native of Denver, Colorado (more specifically the Far Northeast community). My journey as an educator began over 15 years ago and I have taught all grades K-5 in both Orlando Florida and Denver Colorado. I’ve held various leadership roles such as grade level chair, instructional coach (literacy and math), Senior Team Lead/Interventionist, Assistant Principal and now Learn to Lead Principal Resident. I am an advocate for educational equity and I am most passionate about closing opportunity gaps and creating opportunities to ensure the success of ALL students. Through my educational experiences I have been able to support students and families from many different cultures and backgrounds. These experiences have helped mold me into the leader I am today. They’ve also taught me many valuable lessons around intercultural diversity, equity and inclusion in our classrooms and the significance of children being able to show up as their authentic selves and not lose sight of who they are in order to fit into an educational system or box. I believe in the power and beauty of creating unique experiences for all students and look forward to our journey together as learners.

LONGMONT DAIRY MILK CAPS
If you receive Longmont Dairy products, please save your caps and bring them to the school. We receive 5 cents per cap, which adds up! You can feed your caps to Betsy, our new bin for collecting the caps. Besty will be located in the school, please ask the front office where she is if you do not see her near the main doors. This is a simple and easy way to raise money for PTA.

January is National Braille Literacy Month!
January recognizes the legally blind and visually impaired for National Braille Literacy Month. The observance raises awareness of the importance of Braille to the blind and visually impaired community. As audio technology progresses, the use of Braille dwindles. However, its significance remains, especially in the workplace and the classroom. The month offers the opportunity to learn about and appreciate Braille. It’s also an excellent time to explore Braille’s history.
One of our students did a presentation in class about Braille (see clips in this week's news!). We're so thankful for your lesson Auden!

BESS SURVEY FOR FAMILIES
DPS students participate three times per year in the BESS (Behavioral and Emotional Supports Screener) survey. The survey consists of a student AND adult portion. The survey is 28 questions long and takes students about ten minutes to complete. Students in 3rd-5th Grades will take their Fall portion of the survey in class in the next few weeks. These students, and ALL families (regardless of grade), will be asked to take this survey three times throughout the school year to gather baseline and year-long data.
Prior to the student screening, we need parents/guardians to complete their portion of the survey. We are asking that this be completed no later than midnight on January 19th. The survey should take about 5 minutes to complete. To log in, you will need your student’s DPS student ID number and their date of birth. (Families can log in to Parent Portal to see their student's ID number. At the top right corner your student's name and number will be listed after the school name. There will be a drop down to switch between your students. Or you can call the front office to get your student's ID number.)

Los estudiantes de DPS participan tres veces al año en la encuesta BESS (Evaluación de apoyo emocional y conductual). La encuesta consta de una parte para estudiantes Y para adultos.
