The "Awakening The Dreamer" Symposium is about waking up from the “dream of the modern world” that is destroying our planet and way of life. Awakening the Dreamer was created in response to an invitation from the Achuar people of the Ecuadorian Amazon to work in partnership to shift the dominant culture of consumption and alienation to one that honors and sustains all life.

Scorching summer heat, prolonged drought, flooding rain, and sea level rise may motivate communities to reduce their vulnerability to climate impacts, but projects and actions that reduce heat-trapping gas emissions, the underlying driver of climate change, are not prioritized similarly. Ana’s presentation explores how evaluating protective climate actions through a natural hazards model focused on vulnerability can perpetuate this status quo.
