HEALING

THROUGH CREATIVITY

by Jo Strausz Rosen

Art has long been celebrated as a powerful form of expression, allowing individuals to convey emotions and ideas that words alone often can’t capture. Engaging in artistic activities offers profound benefits, fostering mental, emotional, and physical well-being. At JSL, we believe in and explore the transformative power of art in the lives of our residents.

There is therapeutic power in making art. Art therapy uses the creative process to improve a person's well-being. This practice is beneficial for older adults and offers cognitive stimulation, emotional expression, physical benefits, and social interaction. Currently, Fleischman Residents in memory care and assisted living are working with a teacher from the FAR Conservatory of Therapeutic and Performing Arts, helping them gain a deeper understanding of themselves and teaching different ways to understand and communicate their thoughts and feelings. We are deeply grateful to the Cutler family for facilitating this grant in the arts at Fleischman.

FRIENDS

Yesterday, I walked our beautiful West Bloomfield campus as part of the planning for our Family Fall Festival on September 22. It’s so nice out there and the weather (thunderstorms notwithstanding) has been perfect for resident out trips such as yesterday’s cruise on the Detroit River.

JSL resident Faye Damraur (right), with her daughter, JSL volunteer, Jodi (left)

It made me think about my grandmother when she was at Borman Hall. She had severe osteoporosis and was confined to a wheelchair because she had had so many falls and bone breaks. I used to go pick her up at Borman. The staff would help get her into my car and we would just drive around for an hour. She was so happy to just look out the window and see the scenery and point out places and share her memories of them.

Our residents love to get out too and, as you can imagine, it takes a lot of help to do these trips, but they are so much fun for everyone. We’d like to invite volunteers who are able to push a wheelchair to join us on some of these adventures. Give me a ring if you’d like to join us!

If you’re more into quiet activities, we have lots of residents in both West Bloomfield and Oak Park who would love a visit, to play a game, chat, go for a walk. It’s truly a great mitzvah to visit someone who could use a little human connection.

How about Hebrew? We have some folks in Oak Park who would love to learn it. If you speak Hebrew and have a couple of hours a week to share it, please give me a call!

Whatever you like to do, from arts and crafts to expert lectures to casual walks around our lovely grounds, we have a group who would love to share it with you.

ALL ABOARD

IN DETROIT

Who doesn’t love a boat tour? This week, Fleischman residents embarked on a scenic cruise along the Detroit River with the Special Needs Camp from The J. The joint adventure allowed the participants to get to know each other, share experiences and foster friendships while making memories.

"I love organizing meaningful moments for the residents," Fleischman Life Enrichment Director Gita Atanaskovski said. "Witnessing the immense joy and liveliness during this adventure makes all the effort worth it. All the staff enjoyed watching the smiles on everyone’s faces. Their excitement is incredibly rewarding, and they deserve every bit of it."

COOKING

WITH ELIZABETH

More than a dozen Hechtman residents attended "Cooking With Elizabeth." JSL Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Elizabeth Freyre chopped and mixed fresh ingredients for a summer Quinoa salad. "I love cooking and preparing new recipes with the residents every month. It brings us together to share a love of healthy food, knowledge about nutrition, with easy cooking tips about adding protein and fiber to our diets," Elizabeth said.

SPONSORING

A GOOD CAUSE

JSL and The Brown Center sponsored the First ‘Women Conquer Alzheimer’s Event,” that was held at the Daxton Hotel in Birmingham on June 6. WXYZ Channel 7 Investigative Reporter Heather Catallo was the emcee for the crowd of almost 200, who heard from Dr. Rebecca Edelmayer, senior director of scientific engagement for the Alzheimer’s Assoc. about new treatments and current research in the disease. The guests shopped at more than 20 women-owned vendors at the Wellness boutique during cocktail hour.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Cali Love Wrap

Some sandwiches have just “got it.” And this one works, whether you enjoy the original or the light version (that’s just as good). That's "a wrap!"

The probability of a blue lobster existing is widely touted as being one in two million. Bright blue lobsters are so-colored because of a genetic abnormality that causes them to produce more of a certain protein than others.

Baby Steps

Everyone is mesmerized when they observe a baby taking its first steps. It’s thrilling to witness the independence and excitement and joy on the face of the newest walker.

A resident recently shared with me that when her son graduated nursery school each of the young students got a bracelet with a note and a key attached. The note read, “Know that you can always return here to your school and experiences.” What a beautiful gesture. The youthful and innocent spark we each possess should always remain an option for us to return.

Bronzing baby shoes is a tangible way to make a meaningful and lasting memento. So let us feel recharged with youthful joy that we possess within us.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
